CHRIS Broadfoot’s long Gold Coast Premier League career is over after leaving Surfers Paradise to join Broadbeach United’s Coast League One finals push.
Lured out of retirement by Surfers coach and close friend Alex Morrison late last season, Broadfoot has been restricted to a bit-part role in 2019 as Teddy Watson, Hayden Sumner and Brandon Gomez have shared the bulk of the attacking responsibilities.
The 38-year-old was not helped by a six-week ankle injury suffered in April, and he came to a decision to hang up the boots for good following last Sunday’s 2-2 draw away to Coomera.
KNIGHTS POISED FOR MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT
However, with brother Steve part of a Broadbeach side sitting fourth in the Coast League, the former Gold Coast United star on Thursday signed on for their top-four quest.
“I was just going to retire but then I was talking to my brother and he said ‘why don’t you come and have a run?’. We haven’t played together for about 10 years so I thought it would be nice to finish with him,” said Broadfoot, who has previously spent time at Broadbeach, Burleigh, Coomera, Gold Coast Knights, Mudgeeraba and Southport.
“After the game against Coomera on Sunday, I was just going to hang the boots up. I had to be honest with myself and admit the Premier League pace is just too quick for me at my age.
“I’m struggling to have the impact I want and I was just getting frustrated. It was more of a bit-part role (at Surfers this season) and I thought at 38 and training two nights a week, I’d rather be out be there playing and scoring goals.
“This was going to be my last year anyway. If I play next year it will just be in Metro (competition) or Goals (Australia) five-a-side, just to keep fit.”
Capped five times at A-League level by Gold Coast United, Broadfoot is likely to line up for Broadbeach in tomorrow’s 6pm Coast League battle with Runaway Bay at Nikiforides Family Park.
Having also joined the Football Gold Coast board late last year, he said he was hopeful of helping the game off the field in retirement.
“It’s been a little bit of sitting back trying to get a good understanding of what’s going on and what we’re trying to achieve (on the FGC board), but we’ve made some progress on a few things and I’m enjoying it,” he said.
