GOLD Coast United have pulled off one of the biggest recruitment coups of the NPL Queensland off-season with the signing of New Zealand and A-League great Shane Smeltz.
The 38-year-old striker, who sits second on the A-League’s all-time goalscoring list with 92, will return to the pitch after spending the past few seasons coaching Sydney FC’s youth and NPL teams.

A two time A-League Golden Boot winner and Johnny Warren Medal recipient, Smeltz earned 58 international caps for New Zealand, highlighted by a goal in New Zealand’s famous 1-1 draw with Italy at the 2010 World Cup.
He joins a United squad already boasting ex-Socceroo and former Gold Coast United teammate Michael Thwaite, as well as experienced NPL pair Sam Smith and Justyn McKay.

“One of the biggest things I’m looking forward to is helping the youth players here at the club,” Smeltz said.
“For me it’s about giving back. It’s a club and football community I’m passionate about. It’s exciting and I’m keen to be involved.”
