Coomera Hope Island all-rounder Phil Tunnicliffe named Kookaburra Cup Player of the Year

COOMERA Hope Island all-rounder Phil Tunnicliffe has fended off challenges from Nic Peterson and Rhys McCarthy to claim Cricket Gold Coast’s Sam Loxton Medal.

New Zealand native Tunnicliffe (20 votes) was tonight crowned the Kookaburra Cup’s Player of the Year after finishing five votes ahead of Southport Labrador batsman Peterson and Burleigh counterpart McCarthy.

BULLETIN’S KOOKABURRA CUP TEAM OF THE SEASON

Tunnicliffe amassed a competition-high 742 runs at an average of 43.65 for the Crocs and also took 28 wickets at 14.36.

Peterson, a joint-winner of the 2017-18 prize, scored the second-most runs in first grade with 666 at 39.18, while McCarthy was fourth with 574 at 47.83.

Matthew Morris (14 votes), who made 606 runs at 37.88 for the Tigers, was fourth for the overall award, with Mudgeeraba Nerang’s Dayne Siede and Surfers Paradise’s Nathan Reardon tied for fifth on 13 votes.

Tunnicliffe, whose heroics could not lift Coomera into the finals, also took out the Batting Aggregate trophy, with Broadbeach Robina veteran Steven Baker (359 runs at 59.83) claiming the Batting Average award.

The Bowling Aggregate prize went to Southport’s Wade Kilborn (34 wickets at 18.47), while Alberton Ormeau all-rounder Shane Connors (31 wickets at 9.45) finished with the Bowling Average award.

WEIGHT LIFTED FOR CUP’S NEW PREMIERS

Surfers’ Wayne Phillips won second grade Player of the Year after scoring 440 runs at 33.85 and taking 45 wickets at 12.02.
