JACK Hargreaves has been handed the Gold Coast Dolphins’ captaincy reigns for a must-win Queensland Premier Cricket clash with Valleys that will test the depth of both clubs.
With regular skipper Matt Kuhnemann and Dolphins teammates Xavier Bartlett, Max Bryant and Michael Neser on Wednesday named in a 14-man Queensland squad for the opening two games of the Marsh One Day Cup, versatile batsman Hargreaves will tomorrow assume the top leadership position for the first time.
FIVE THINGS WE LEARNED FROM CRICKET - WEEK TWO
In and out of the Dolphins’ first grade outfit since making his debut five years ago, the 25-year-old enjoyed a breakout summer in 2018-19, cementing his spot in the top side with 479 runs at 25.21.
Valleys, who like the Dolphins have split their two one-day fixtures so far, will also be lacking some of their regular firepower after fast bowler Mark Steketee and all-rounder Jack Wildermuth were chosen for the Bulls.
SWAN’S ULTIMATE COMPLIMENT FOR HOPE-SHACKLEY
Having overcome a Round 1 loss to Wynnum Manly with a 68-run defeat of Redlands last weekend, the Dolphins will be guaranteed a spot in the one-day quarterfinals with victory against the Diehards at Ashgrove.
Their triumph over the Tigers came after all-rounder Liam Hope-Shackley (127 not out) dug them out of a hole at 5-76, with coach Chris Swan confident it can kickstart a successful run this season.
“It just shows the belief that the groups got in themselves,” the first-year mentor said.
“Jack has developed leadership habits over a long period of time without even knowing it. It’s a natural progression of life and another opportunity for him to have an intimate impact on others on field and off.”
THUNDER UNVEIL SQUAD FOR COUNTRY CHALLENGE MISSION
Fast bowlers Jackson Smith and Nathan Lyons, as well as spin-bowling all-rounder Ben Davis, have been brought into the Dolphins side to replace Kuhnemann, Bartlett and Bryant.
The Bulls play their first game against NSW at Allan Border Field on Sunday, before hosting South Australia two days later.
