WHEN aspiring players approach Australian rugby sevens young gun Lily Dick at a clinic on the Gold Coast on Sunday, the 19-year-old will know what they are getting themselves into.

Dick played touch football, netball and athletics as a kid until falling in love with rugby sevens at a come-and-try day at Ballymore.

It’s a similar story to the path many of the girls, aged 12 to 17, have taken en route to heading to Surfers Paradise rugby club on Sunday.

“It is mainly younger girls and showing them what rugby is about, because most of them have played touch or other sports but haven’t really done the tackling and rugby side of it,” said Dick, who will be joined at the clinic by teammate Lauren Brown.

“I have been in the exact same position, turning up to a Get Into Rugby day.”

The Palm Beach Currumbin Alleygators junior went on to be part of the Griffith University squad that took out the 2018 Aon Uni Sevens Series and was called up into the Sydney-based full-time national program last August.

She noted she relishes any time on the Coast to give back to the sport locally: “I don’t get to come back as much as I’d like but it is awesome coming back and I love helping out.”

Dick has been satisfied with her form in Australian colours as she prepares to leave with the team in a fortnight’s time for Biarritz, France, for the last leg of the World Series.

“I have had more minutes than expected but it has been really good,” she said.

New Zealand are all but certain to clinch first place overall but Australia could conceivably rise from fourth to second with a strong result.
