Marsden SHS players were all smiles following the round one win.

Cross region rivals Marsden SHS and Mabel Park SHS were off to a winning start in their respective Schoolgirls Cup matches.

Marsden defeated new chums Stretton State College 62-0 while Mabel Park wrestled with a bold Palm Beach Currumbin SHS which gave a good account in its debut game. Mabel won 28-14.

Poor Stretton tried so hard against the 2024 grand finalist, but had no bench and played all of the second half with just 12 players.

We also Players of the Day following’s Ipswich SHS’s win over St James.

MARSDEN SHS 62 DEF STRETTON SC 0

Deleni Paitai (Marsden SHS)

Deleni Paitai (Marsden SHS)

Paitai was sublime, producing an unmatched running game and a nice passing contribution which added variety to the Marsden attack. Gosh, she also hit hard in defence, producing the tough tackle of the game five minutes from full-time.

Paitai could play second row or centre with ease, so athletic is she.

Mya Tronco (Marsden SHS)

Tronc added starch to the Marsden pack, running hard and hitting harder in defence. Her presence added authority to the Marsden effort. It was fitting that she scored.

REPLAY

Stretton State College v Marsden SHS (Schoolgirls Cup) – 2025 Langer Trophy Round 1

Evelyn Roberts (Marsden SHS)

Roberts was the queen of the ball play, a wonderful right side half whose passing, strength in carrying and overall presence added strike to the Marsden effort.

Sienna Ibrahim, Biarnka Joyce and Riley-Jay Henry-Purcell.

Elisa Asamau (Marsden SHS)

The middle forward interchange player may have started late, but made up for lost time with a barnstorming game. She added plenty to Marsden’s power game. She thoroughly deserved her try which kickstarted her team’s second half.

_Te-Rina Pearse and Leevi Williams of Stretton SC.

Te Rina Pearse (Stretton)

Pearse tried her heart out in defence, hitting hard and trying to inspire her side.

With more troops around her, she will be even more effective.

Leevi Williams also tried hard to get up and in the face of the Marsden runners, and we look forward to when she gets more ball to bring her running game into play. She is a proven first class footballer. Her chase to prevent Evelyn Roberts from scoring late in the second half showed plenty of character.

Enah Desic, Lashae Tonga, Evelyn Roberts and Leilani Taofinuu.

Special mentions

Leilani Taofinuu (Marsden SHS)

Taofinuu was like a Rolls-Royce idling in the garage, but when she came out to play, the centre ace made significant inroads.

Sienna Ibrahim, played second row instead of centre, also added plenty of strike with the ball and hitting power on the edge for her new school.

MABEL PARK SHS 28 DEF PBC SHS 14

Kaylee Booth (PBC SHS)

Gutsty halfback Kaylee Booth (pictured) as a Tweed junior representative. She played for Palm Beach Currumbin on Wednesday.
Gutsty halfback Kaylee Booth (pictured) as a Tweed junior representative. She played for Palm Beach Currumbin on Wednesday.

Booth brought a brilliant boot, toughness and finesse to a brave PBC side that can give the best teams a run for their money this season.

It was like she was in her own world, kicking PBC into a winning position. They led 4-0 and were intact with Mabel until the home side hit sixth gear and ran away with it.

Both created the first try by Nia Brooks with a cut out pass. She created the third with a deft cross field kick which rolled into the hands of Taharnee Byrnes.

Her well executed kick restart which bounced into touch and earned PBC possession created that.

You best believe her grabber game was on too.

One half of a highly promising sister pairing, Mele Misa made light work of her rivals with some thumping tackles, great lines and subtle ball skills.

Even more potent in this competition than in representative club league for Souths Logan, is a battered, bruised and then belted again for good measure against a Reds team that did well to contain her from time to time.

But there is no holding Misa across a full match and she had her moments after receiving a yellow card early in the game.

PATRICIA HEIHEI (MABEL PARK SHS)

A new face in the Mabel Park stable, Heinei had time and tenacity at halfback which created a great try late in the game to right edge forward Teyah Han.

Mabel will be confident they can challenge for this year’s premiership with the likes of Heihei and Tiahna Kanawi in the halves.

Heihei used her bustling running game to get Mabel on the move and with momentum on their side. It was a stellar debut game after she moved from Auckland.

MACKENZIE AND SASKIA CROYSTON (PBC SHS)

The Croyston sisters, much like influential Mabel duo Mele and Amaani, were here, there and everything in an inspiring performance.

Mackenzie’s -top service from dummyhalf, clear direction and brave defence set a high standard.

In the middle alongside her, lock Saskia, served up a storm with her fearless front-on defence

Key cogs in Tweed’s outstanding under-19s outfit, the dynamic Coast duo just seem to improve with every experience. They are first class, top notch players.

In the Harvey under-19s semi-final against eventual premiers Easts, Saskia wore jersey No.8 and Mackenzie No.9.

Ari Colenso-Tevita (Mabel SHS)

The baby of the squad, Colenso-Tevita took her first game with two hands and delivered a brilliant performance.

A creative, fearless type out of dummy half, the Mabel youngster scored once and was involved in another try in a second half of dreams.

She was at the forefront when Mabel made their charge to pull away from a gritty Reds outfit.

IPSWICH SHS v ST JAMES

Orianna Clark (Ipswich SHS)

Orinna Clark and Summer Hoet - the co-captains of the Ipswich women's open team.

It was a comprehensive team win by Ipswich over St James on Tuesday but it was hard not to be impressed by the power-game of returning battering ram Orianna Clark.

Clark scored three tries for her troubles and took no prisoners when she took the ball forward.

You get the feeling a big season in store.

Ipswich Jet Emily Jackwitz - she was excellent for Ipswich SHS on Tuesday.

Jannali Wyles-Entermann (Ipswich SHS)

Wyles-Entermann showed in 25 minutes of football that she is going to be an important player for Ipswich over the next two seasons.

A young Year 11 student, Wyles-Entermann has built on a cracking club campaign with the Ipswich Jets to give the reigning champions outside back depth and a great running option early in sets.

A fullback or winger, Wyles-Entermanne has toughness, skill and speed in abundance. She scored three tries in no time against a stunned St James.

Layla Satui (St James)

The St James captain, the Redcliffe Haryvey Norman ace Satui led by example and inspired teammates around her.

Mya Onosai (St James)

A proven performer at Harvey Norman representative club level, Onosai was typically hard working and tried to stem the tide. She was consistent throughout with her efforts from kick off to full time.

Emalini Waqairatu (Ipswich SHS)

Emalini Waqairatu (right) as a Jets player - she was an Ipswich SHS ace on Tuesday.
Emalini Waqairatu (right) as a Jets player - she was an Ipswich SHS ace on Tuesday.

Another handful for Ipswich this week, Waqairatu has been going from strength to strength in Ispwich’s academy and she brought her revered toughness and determination to a round 1 bout won within the first 10 minutes.

Sporting bright green headgear and rarely taking no for an answer, Waqairatu joined Charity Faalago and the whole Ipswich pack in thrusting St James onto the back foot to provide exciting No.6 Amber Collins room to weave some magic.

Special mentions

Saili Chan Kee and Kina Vainga (St James)

There were good glimpses from Saili Chan Kee and Kina Vainga in a challenging clash.

Their performance against a well-oiled Ipswich machine should give them a great platform to build and improve on for the rest of the competition.
