Bucket loads of school pride and Indigenous flair was a major theme in Ipswich State High’s superb season opening 62-0 win over St James on Tuesday.

Indigenous duo Geraldine Lomas (fullback) and Jannali Wyles-Entermann (winger) were little rippers for the reigning champions in their try-scoring bonanza against a outclassed St James side which will be better for the experience.

Wyles-Entermann, a Year 11 student part of a fresh crop of new faces in this year’s side, scored three tries in the first half to quickly entrench herself in the proud Ipswich NRL Schoolgirls Cup team chasing more glory in 2025.

More than 12 of the 25 girls that featured in last year’s champion side are back older and wiser. Wyles-Entermann and the goal-kicking Lomas are looking to add speed, finesse and skill wherever they can to achieve great things.

“She (Lomas) has been one of the most energising players,” said Ipswich coach Alex Nicholson.

“She brings energy, positivity and has improved in leaps and bounds.”

Nicholson is referencing the fast development of Bremer SHS product Lomas who has moved schools to be exposed to the best Queensland Schoolgirls league has to offer.

Lomas has already had a year to remember making the Ipswich Jets under-19s outfit and Met West under-18s where she fit right in against quality opposition.

Wyles-Entermann, 16, also a Jets and Met West representative, is an “excellent finisher” and “even “better ball runner” according to Nicholson.

Despite her young age, fullback or winger Wyles-Entermann seems to know her role back-to-front. Her fearless carries early in sets during Tuesday’s game created the perfect platform for forward leader Orianna Clark to wreak havoc with three tries.

“She’s pretty impressive,” Nicholson said of Wyles-Entermann, a slightly built speedster who has become “very reliable”.

The pacey Ipswich pair would put on a riveting race if they went head to head. Lomas is a speed machine over 20m while her long-striding accomplice Wyles-Entermann would have her by a hair across 100m.

Dynamic edge forward Orianna Clark and skilled prop, No.13 or even halve Lishainah Ulugia will be crucial, with Queensland Schoolgirls select Clark has been named co-captain alongside Ipswich Jets powerhouse Summer Hoet.

A trio of other talents in Charity Faalogo, Easter Taualai and Emily Jackwitz are also sure to be key players across the campaign.

Ipswich was unstoppable last season, taking down Marsden in the Pool A decider before defeating The Cathedral College in the state grand final.

Sauaso then led the charge in a 28-6 victory over NSW powerhouse Hills Sports High in the national final.

For last season’s newcomers St James College, registering the school’s first win in the competition will be the aim after failing to get off the mark on debut in 2024.

Winger Sinaleti Tupu and Ofa Kalauta are two exciting St James talents who will be looking to make an impact in a competition which has gone from strength to strength – this year featuring seven teams.

Live stream coverage of the Queensland NRL Schoolgirl Cup clash will begin from 12.30pm Tuesday as part of a massive week of action on KommunityTV.
