Dangerous BBL pitches, Hurricanes vs Sixers preview & a nightmare SuperCoach start!

Gold Coast have fallen agonisingly short of becoming the under 14 Queensland Junior Cricket champions.

Taking on last years champions, Gold Coast lost by three wickets to the BEARS on Friday.

It is the second time in two years that the BEARS have claimed the trophy.

BEARS coach Liam Murphy said it was a great team effort all week.

“The boys fought back really well after letting Gold Coast get some runs early on the board,” Murphy said.

“It was a great match to watch, just to see how the boys changed the way they were playing during the game.

“Shoubhit Jain bowled really well and Zac Moore just batted beautifully when we needed someone.

“He was almost there at the end which would have been nice for him.

“The boys are very happy though, good to see them win it.”

Batting first, Cooper Brown (39), Oliver Lum (23) and Tom Bouwmeester (33) all got starts and helped the home side to 161.

But the damage was done thanks to BEARS opening bowler Shoubhit Jain who claimed 3-27 from his 10 overs.

Confusion late in the innings between batters caused the last three wickets to all be run out as Gold Coast lost 6-52 to be bowled out on their last ball of the innings.

A wicket early thanks to Archie Atkinson lifted the spirits of the home side but it was consistent partnerships between wickets that helped the BEARS claim their second championship in two years.

BEARS opening bat Zac Moore made a brilliant 53 from 115 balls and led the way as well as being well supported by Rafa Schroor (37 from 42) and Luke Felsman (25 from 35).

Gold Coast all-rounder Tom Bouwmeester did everything he could to help get his side to victory, not only with the bat but his bowling gave them every chance, picking up 4-20 from his six overs.

But the BEARS were too strong in the end, hitting the winning runs in the 48th over.

“They had the presentations straight after the game and players who made 75 plus runs go up and we didn’t have anyone go up,” Murphy said.

“That just shows how spreadout it all was, that in every game, someone different stood up.

“It was good to see both Zac (Moore) and Shoubhit (Jain) make the team of the tournament.”

Gold Coast Junior Dolphins ready to take on Queensland best

Some of the best junior Queensland cricketers have flocked to the Gold Coast as the Queensland Junior Cricket carnivals kick off on Monday.

Eight regions will compete to be classed as the best under 14’s team across the Sunshine State, when they clash at The Southport School over a five day carnival.

Gold Coast coach Leigh Callander believes his side is the strongest team.

“This is probably one of the best sides I have coached, I am really excited to see this talent together,” Callander said.

“We play the three games from Monday to Wednesday, then the semi final on Thursday and then the final on Friday.

“We have a few standouts this year who I think can really dominate the tournament.

“I know it will be a tough tournament but the kids are really keen and excited to play together.”

The Bayside East and Redlands won the tournament last year and are the team to beat for this year’s carnival.

The BEARS and Gold Coast will be joined by SEQ, MSW, Darling Downs, Wide Bay, Sunshine Coast and BNJCA.

“We don’t play the BEARS unless we play them in one of the finals, which the boys are keen to be part of,” Callander said.

“I know they are young players, but they have plenty of experience in this tournament.

“Some players have played two or three years previously and come through.”

Each team will play three games across three days before the finals at the end of the week.

“Archie is probably the quickest bowler in the competition, which is handy for us,” Callander said.

“If he gets it right and can hit a consistent spot, he will do some damage this year.”
