Gold Coast cricket Over 40s and 50s teams of the season

With the cricket season now wrapped up for Over 40s and 50s players, we reveal the teams of the season in each division. SEE THE FULL TEAMS HERE.

CLUB president Paul Azzopardi says Broadbeach Robina will be well placed to chase a fourth straight Over 40s Division 1 premiership after claiming a stunning three-peat.

Broadbeach Robina were declared the 2021-22 premiers going into the weekend after flooding ended the season early.

Burleigh (Over 40s Division 2), Tamborine Mountain (Over 40s Division 3) and Logan Village (Over 50s) were also declared the premiers of their respective competitions.

The clubs were placed at the top of the ladder at the time of the floods.

“It is very rewarding (to win a third straight title),” Azzopardi, who plays in the team, said.

“We have a really good group who enjoy their time togetehr and ave been playing consistently together for some time.

“It is such a positive environment and that has played a big part in the success.”

Opening batsman Steven Baker was one of the stars of the competition, hitting 304 runs at an average of 101.33.

“Steven is obviously a standout but we also have a very good bowling group,” Azzopardi said.

“We have a lot of depth in our batting and some exceptional fielders too. There is a good balance.”

Azzopardi said the majority of the group would return for the 2022-23 season, putting Broadbeach Robina in the box seat toclaim another premiership.

The playing group got together on Saturday to celebrate the title as a team.

Azzopardi said they would have liked to win the premiership in a grand final but was proud of the performances of the team that enabled them to stand at the top of the ladder going into the final stages of the season.

“We would always prefer to get the win out on the field but history tells us on the Gold Coast that weather always plays apart so you need to make an effort to finish on top of the tree just in case this happens,” Azzopardi said.

With the season now wrapped up in the four divisions, the Bulletin has scoured the records to come up with teams of the season in each.

As part of the criteria, batsmen were selected as close to the order they played in, meaning if one of the top run scorers was an opener but he was the fifth best in that position for the season then he missed the cut.
