Langer Trophy heavyweights Palm Beach Currumbin shook off a shock Round 1 result to power past Caloundra State High.

A week after settling for a draw against Marsden, there was no worries about settling again for the Gold Coast nursery after they cruised to a 30-4 win over their northern rivals.

Both teams came out swinging to begin the match with both looking to secure their first win of the season.

Palm Beach Currumbin kept the pressure on early with repeat sets before a smart grubber and try from halfback Jake Lateo caught Caloundra fullback Toby Irvine out of position and allowed them to open the scoring after just six minutes.

A costly error in PBC’s own half was an invitation to Caloundra’s Zac Garton to hit back on the scoresheet before the attempted conversion struck the upright.

Back-to-back attacking sets from PBC was again the undoing for Caloundra with Baylen Donald crashing over to take the lead to 12-4 before halftime.

The teams came out for the second half with plenty left to prove and an early try to PBC’s Jac Finigan off the back of a deflected kick extend the lead to 16-4.

A good running line from right centre Barney Litidamu notched up PBC’s fourth try of the evening before another kick in behind the defensive line from Lateo produced an awkward bounce for Irvine in the in-goal, bouncing over his head and Baylen Donald scoring his second of the match.

Walters Cup: Palm Beach Currumbin make it two in a row to kick start season

Palm Beach Currumbin made short work of rivals Caloundra State High in the Walters Cup, running out dominant 46-6 winners.

Palm Beach Currumbin opened their account early thanks to some smart short side play from forward Nelson Makaafi allowed him to beat his man comfortably before a simple draw and pass to winger Jake Wardley saw him stroll over and score close to the sticks.

The men in red and white were in again at the hands of Cruz Dangerfield who proved too big and too powerful close to the line before some fancy footwork from fullback Dylan Watkins added to the lead just minutes later.

Some great link-up play between halfback Marley McLaren, edge forward Cruz Dangerfield and Skye Adams saw PBC cross for their fourth try after just 12 minutes.

Marley McLaren crossed for PBC soon after before a great individual effort from Caloundra centre Sam Cavanagh gave the Seahawks their first points of the afternoon.

The teams came out for the second half with the score line 28-6 and the trend quickly continued for PBC with tries to Josiah Faaoso and Cruz Dangerfield for his second of the match.

Damaging forward Brodie Saunders also got his try-scoring season off the mark with back-to-back four pointers before the full time siren sounded.

PREVIEW: Caloundra determined to shake off the nerves against Langer heavyweights

Caloundra are hoping the nerves of being new to the Langer series will wear off in time to put on their best performance against Palm Beach Currumbin on Wednesday.

The school found the going tough in their competition debut against Wavell SHS last week - although they finished nicely with a couple of late tries to give them a lift.

Caloundra head coach Toby Poole said his side isn’t short on talent and is expecting an improved performance against PBC.

“Everyone pretty much plays club footy,” Poole said.

“Between both teams (Walters Cup and Langer Trophy) there’s also about 20-30 players who have represented the Sunshine Coast Falcons Cyril Connell Challenge and Mal Meninga Cup sides.

“Some kids have moved over from New Zealand, others from Cairns, Canberra and so on, so it’s all positive steps for us.”

The match will be key for PBC to bounce back from their less-than-ideal start last week and reassert themselves as top contenders this season.

PBC needed a late try to haul in Marsden and grab a 10-10 draw in their opener and head coach Tom Maccan admitted ‘it’s a big game for us, and also for Caloundra’.

Caloundra SHS Langer Trophy Highlight

“Everyone after the first round, especially those who lost, will come out with a point to prove,” he said.

“Our focus this week has been on the little things … not switching off.”

PBC will rely on their trusty skipper Zane Harrison and Jett Jackson once again to lead the pack.

In the Walters Cup, Caloundra will be looking for improvement after going down 34-10 against Wavell last week, while PBC began their season with a 22-16 success over Marsden.
