Wavell State High’s little maestro Timahna Tandy will wear his heart on his sleeve, his chest, and rest of his upper body when the school goes into battle on Wednesday.
The fullback, who has played a key role in Wavell’s run to the Langer Trophy finals, also had a large hand in designing the school’s NAIDOC week jersey which they will don for this week’s clash with Stretton State College.
The Langer Trophy clash will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV as part of a double header along with the Walters Cup showdown between the two schools.
Tandy, a rising Indigenous playmaker from the southern Darling Downs, designed the jersey back in 2023 and this is the third and most-likely final time the jersey is worn before the baton is passed to another crop of students to design a new NAIDOC strip.
The clash will also double as the final home game of the season for Wavell’s senior playing group, who will be determined to see out their time on the school’s main oval in style.
“It’s a pretty big occasion for our seniors, the last time they’ll be playing at the school. This is when it starts to hit them,” Wavell SHS coach Paul Stanley said.
The seniors that will play for Wavell include Tandy, Ruben Webb, Sangstar Figota, Payton Gifford, James Spicer, Sonny Herdegen, Lisi Fa’aoso and skipper Hayden Polson.
A number of the senior group have stepped up this season, but none moreso than representative centre Sangstar Figota.
He was ultra-consistent in the first half of the season, before going to the next level after hsi week with the national title-winning Queensland side at the ASSRL Nationals.
Helping lead the charge alongside the fleet-footed Figota has been two standout Year 11 students, prop Dallas Davidson and Saia Papani, who have relished the jump in class from the Walters Cup.
“(Dallas) has been really strong every week,” Stanley said.
“We’ve had a few injuries in the forwards across the year and, as a younger student playing the toughest position on the field, he has been really consistent every week.
“He’s really impressed me and really surprised me with how he has taken to playing in the Langer Trophy.”
Papani was top notch for the Dolphins in the Cyril Connell Cup earlier this year and has maintained the rage to consistently make positive involvements for his school.
“He does a lot of the things that people don’t see but he’s super consistent,” Stanley said in praise.
“Super reliable, you know what you’re going to get from him.”
Papani might not be the guy making a 40m break on the regular but his effort and defensive work is “outstanding” on the edge.
