The wait for netball fans across the Sunshine State is finally over, the Sapphire Series has returned for another season.

It is a season full of storylines.

The Brisbane Cougars will chase a historic fifth-straight Sapphire Series crown, while the Jets will be determined to rise above the heartbreak of coming as close as they did last year.

The clubs on the Glitter Strip have both made big improvements to their rosters, with the return of one of Bond Uni’s favourites in Mia Stower.

The tournament will also return to your screens with weekly double headers from the Sapphire Series exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV as part of a new-look coverage this season.

News Corp Australia’s Queensland netball expert Grace Hamilton has dug beneath the surface at every club to reveal their full squads for the season ahead, the best rising stars set to make their mark on the Sapphire Series and the classy veterans determined to prove there is still plenty of gas left in the tank.

The next break-out star:

Formerly with the Thunder, Ellie Brice will play her first season of Sapphires. She was a member of the Qld 17’s nationals side in 2023, U19s at the recent 2024 nationals, and talent identified for the Australian (AIS) 17’s squad 2023. Brice is a hard worker with great speed, defends tightly and reads the play well. In attack, she uses her speed to drive and open spaces

Veteran you need to watch:

Losa Niumata returned to the court last season after a knee reconstruction. Having spent the time developing her confidence and building her skills in pre-season, she is ready to go even harder in 2024. Niumata is looking forward to captaining the team and leading by example. She boasts great vision and change of pace – essential qualities for a centre court player.

The next break-out star:

Elsa Sif Sandholt is an exciting young athlete that started to hit her straps last year. She was a gymnast before beginning her netball career, and in the short years since, has developed into a household name.

Veterans to keep an eye on:

Lily Gribble had eight games off last year with a serious ankle injury. She has worked tirelessly on her fitness and strength and will be even more exciting to watch in 2024. Danielle Taylor had eight games off last year with a torn cruciate ligament. Taylor has done the rehab and is looking stronger than she ever has. The combination her and Gribble will be very exciting in 2024

Steph O’Brien Into her 10th season with the club and has scored the captaincy for 2024. She has gone to another level in her game and will be an exciting player to see in 2024. O’Brien’s strength and speed is up another level, but her smarts have developed even further. She is a cross-code talent, having played QAFL for the Southport Sharks on top of her HSS duties.

The next break-out star:

Kirra Tappenden is an exciting Sunny Coach pathway product that will relish in the super shot period to highlight the amazing range she has at goal and her cool and calm approach.

Baylee Boyd and Jada Delaney return to the HSS court this year as Lightning TP’s, so excited to see how their game has involved in this comp after being in the Lightning program this pre-season.

Samaya Cook and Isabelle Shearer are exciting young defenders from who we look forward to seeing them shine on the HSS/Ruby court for the first time.

Veterans to keep an eye on:

Veteran Maddie Hinchliffe returns to Thunder colours this year and we are excited to have her back. She is consistent and reliable and we have appreciated her experience and leadership both on and off the court.

The next break-out star:

Holly Comyns & Kaylee Tamala: Both have been elevated from last year’s winning Ruby side and have slotted in seamlessly to the Sapphire environment. Comyns is an exciting young defender, coming off a successful nationals campaign with the 19U QLD team and we are confident that she will lift to the challenge of her first full year in Sapphire.

Tamala is a talented attacker that is elusive in her movement and accurate on her shot. She was originally named in the Ruby squad, however earned her place in the Sapphire team through a brilliant pre-season performance.

Veteran to keep an eye on:

Maddi Ridley: Maddi is a true leader both on and off the court. 2024 features her returning for her second year at Tigers, and her first as Sapphire team captain. Ridley was a member of the Firebirds Futures in 2023 that competed at ANC and is also a member of the 2024 Firebirds Academy. She is known for her strong first ball contest, her steadiness with ball in hand and her ability to pick up clean intercepts in WD and C.

BRISBANE SOUTH WILDCATS

Kydan Tuapou has come up to the Sapphire Series side after spending the past two season developing her game in the Ruby Series. She is a local talent who is very passionate about her netball and is working hard to learn and grow in the Sapphire Series environment.

Veteran you need to watch:

Ali Miller is calm, positive and smart on the court. She has proven to be a fantastic influence on the squad in the off-season and the girls truly appreciate her qualities.

The next break-out star:

Jayden Molo stepping up to a permanent Sapphire position. Off the back of leading her QLD 19U team to a silver medal, Molo has developed into a versatile mid court player with the ability to cover all three positions.

Veteran to keep an eye on:

Mia Stower – A veteran at 24, Stower brings to the Bond team a wealth of experience and knowledge she is more than happy to share with the squad. She is highly supportive of the young players around her. Stower looks to bring enjoyment back into her game and has found a home at Bond.
