An historic win for Northern Territory, a run of dominance from South Australia in the 17/U division and NSW in the 19/Us, a controversial grand final sinbinning, an overtime final day thriller ... it’s been quite a week at the 2024 National Netball Championships.

Under-19s Gold - NSW 42 d Queensland 32

After being dominant all week, NSW claimed the 19/U title with a comfortable win over Queensland.

In a State of Origin-type contest, the scores were close for most of the first quarter, but the Sky Blues had marched away with it by halftime.

Queensland goal shooter Kaylin Van Greunen, on the back of her best performance to date in the semifinal, struggled to sink her shots (8/10) under the pressure of NSW’s circle defence.

It proved costly as the maroon centre court became hesitant to feed the ball over the duo of Frederika Schneideman and Katarina Sincek.

The eight-goal deficit at halftime was a telltale for the rest of the match, and NSW head coach Amber Cross said it was just a matter of building.

“Our number one thing is grinding away and working hard one-on-one,” she said.

“I think we did that and just built on it.”

The gold medal was a great way for NSW to farewell their top age athletes from the underaged pathway, including SSN training partners Schneideman, Monika ‘Otai and Grace Whyte.

“It’s a really rare thing to do at a nationals and I think that added extra pressure coming into the grand final,” said Cross.

NSW are the 19/U champions.

“We’ve had a fantastic tournament and knew it was going to be tough coming out to verse Queensland today.

“It was a battle in the beginning but we had a point to prove.

“As a coach it was amazing to be able to sit back and enjoy the last few minutes watching good netball.”

Under-17s Gold - South Australia 30 d Western Australia 28

A controversial sin-binning in the third quarter has cost Western Australia their chance to break a 41-year drought.

South Australia claimed their fifth title since 2016 in a highly-charged match that turned on the sending off of WA goal defender Emily Rivers for three minutes.

Rivers got her marching orders midway through the third quarter for deliberate and dangerous contact to the head, a call that sent shockwaves on and off court.

SA head coach Peta Maher wasn’t surprised by the decision.

“We spoke about it before the game and thought something like this might happen in the grand final,” she said.

“No one goes out intentionally trying to hurt each other, but the girls are just going so hard and fast to win that ball.

“Bodies collide.

“We’d spoken to the girls about how important it was, if there was a send off, to score quickly.

“I think that preparation helped us to be focussed in the moment and not flustered.”

In the space of those three minutes, Elouise Nordhausen and Tahlia Jolly executed shots under the post to claw back a five-goal deficit, SA soon finding themselves in the lead for the first time.

“They had the confidence to bring it home in the end,” Maher said.

However brilliant that third quarter was, Maher admitted there was more to the incredible victory.

“We looked at how we could break down their strength, which was running the zone,” she said.

“Credit to my girls, we gave them some simple instructions.

“They took it and they ran with it and they did the rest.”

South Australia have taken the 17/U title.

19/U Bronze - WA 36 d Victoria 31

Western Australia has dug deep to claim third place in the 19/U competition.

“We knew they (Victoria) were hungry and it’s always a dog fight,” said WA head coach Karly Guadagnin said.

“We just needed to stick to our processes and be better than yesterday.”

A low-scoring first half (16-16) set a tone for the match, which proved to be just as tight as the side’s round 6 clash earlier in the week.

WA’s circle defence duo of Scarlett Jauncey and Grace Jooste made it difficult for Victoria to find the post, and when they did only 70 per cent of shots went in.

Two turnovers in the third quarter gifted WA a rare opportunity, which goal attack Georgie Cleaver capitalised on, earning the side a five-goal lead before going down with an injury.

“We grinded it out goal-for-goal and knew when to pull the trigger,” Guadagnin said.

“I’m super proud of the girls this week.

“We’ve built from game one and that’s what it’s all about, process and building.

“We got a lot of ball and converted it when we needed to.”

17/U Bronze - Victoria 47 d NSW 44 (AET)

Victoria secured third place in a thrilling overtime contest.

The pair had met in round 6 earlier the week and drew 29-29 to secure their spots in the semis.

Victoria head coach Jacinta Todd said she was incredibly proud of the girls for stepping up when it mattered most.

“It’s absolutely amazing,” she said.

“This group of girls have worked so hard this week and they absolutely deserve it.

“To come through with the win in overtime, I’m just so proud.”

It was a close final from the beginning, though the Vics were quick to earn a slight lead, which proved valuable in the third quarter when NSW looked to surge.

Sahara Ball hit a roadblock in the circle with under 50 per cent shooting accuracy, but a combined average of 90% from Annecy Lyon and Amalani Fauonuku kept them on track.

Matilda Percival did the majority of shooting for NSW, sinking 32 at 89 per cent accuracy despite the immense pressure.

The sky blue defence end grew increasingly frustrated while giving away repeat infringements, but determination paid off as the game went into overtime.

It was then that circle defenders Eva Ryan and Mia Aitken earned two key turnovers at the post which VIC converted for their eventual three-goal victory.

NSW V QUEENSLAND

Under-19 Gold Medal

State of Origin will take to the netball court when Queensland and New South Wales battle for under-19s gold Sunday afternoon.

It’s been a decade since the maroon’s went home with such a medal, and their counterparts will be looking to lengthen the drought.

Fan favourites, NSW haven’t lost a game all week - going through the rounds undefeated and getting over WA by 10 in Saturday’s semi-final.

QLD meanwhile have had a rocky campaign with two losses and head coach Rebecca Stower admitting they hadn’t performed their best prior to the semi.

“We hadn’t seen the team’s full potential come through,” Stower said post-match.

“But they earned it, they deserved it and they’re a good bunch of girls.”

Stower, unaware of the lengthy wait since QLD’s last under-19s gold, said it doesn’t put any extra pressure on the team.

“We can only do what we can do.

“These girls are the masters of their own destiny out there,” she said.

“We’ve given them the tools and the preparation, so it’s up to them and how bad they want it.”

SOUTH AUS v WESTERN AUS

Under-17 Gold Medal

South Australia and Western Australia will go head-to-head in the under-17s gold medal clash Sunday afternoon.

But while SA are going for their fifth title in eight years (including two cancelled tournaments), WA are on the hunt for their first under-17s in NNC history.

That’s 41 years of waiting that could well come to an end.

Head coach Guy Keane knows exactly what’s at stake, and said the team is ready for a challenge.

“We’ve done our homework on that game (against SA).

“We’ll go into that contest knowing we can put it up to them.

“We’re ready and excited,” he said.

“South Australia is always really strong in underages nationals.”

Between both states, seven AIS identified athletes will take the court.

Only one point separated the two in round 4, and Keane is eager for an expected close contest.

“They’ve gone undefeated before so we’re happy to go in as underdogs.

“If we’re able to come away with the win, then I’m proud to be a part of it,” he said.
