Queensland South boys will look to their ‘high-powered offence’ and ‘run and gun’ game style to charge to a podium finish at the Basketball Australia Under-16 National Championships in Bendigo.

The Maroon raiders know they have the firepower to blow their opponents off the court, and it will be key to how they take on the national championships.

Every match from the Under-16 National Championships will be streamed LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on KommunityTV from July 6-14.

“We’re a very high-powered offensive team with lots of talent,” Queensland South head coach Micahel Devitt said.

“We’re skilled, athletic and a very fast team. We’re (aiming) to get up and down the floor and make it a high scoring game.

“Isaiah Jorgenson, Andrew Watene and Jayden Cecil will be the primary scoring threats, but the attack will be spread out compared to most of the other teams at the competition.

“The team culture is team-first, everyone’s about each other and what’s on the front of the jersey representing Queensland and not what’s on the back of it.

“(On defence) we’ll try and make it as messy and disruptive as we can for the opposition offence.”

Playmaker Watene is a lighting fast point guard and a highly-driven competitor with a strong defensive game.

A leader on the court, he will serve as the floor general for the Queensland South side.

Guard Cecil is a strong shooter from both beyond the arc and in the mid-range who is also known to be creative off the pick and roll.

At 191cm (6ft 3 inch), Cecil is a long defender capable of irritating opposition scorers.

Defensive stopper Elijah Tuupo will be the player head coach Devitt will turn to when it comes to quelling the opposition’s primary scorer throughout the tournament.

Fellow forward Jorgenson is athletically gifted while possessing a threatening wingspan.

Standing at 195cm (6ft 5inch), Jorgenson uses his agility to snatch rebounds while quick on transition.

Harley Baker will likely line-up as the starting centre with his tough defensive work and soft touch around the rim,

Queensland South boys finished third-last in 2023, however with a brand new side and a fresh influx of talent, the team is determined to make a rapid rise up the tournament standings.

“Gold medal is definitely the target,” Devitt said.

“There’s a whole lot more talent, a lot more competitive fire and we’re not the best defensive side but we’re more committed to slow the opposition down as much as we can.”

Keep an eye out for 193 cm (6ft 4 inch) Trae Dombroski as sixth man off the bench.

Dombroski is a bottom-ager who can play anywhere from point guard to centre.
