HOT TIPS: WEEKEND BEST BETS
DANNY RUSSELL (Herald Sun)
FLEMINGTON
BANKER: STRATUM STAR (Race 4, No. 2)
Darren Weir has him primed third-up, can control race from the front.
IN THE FRAME: KEEN ARRAY (Race 6, No. 9)
Big wraps from Lindsay Park. Put a pen through Oakleigh Plate shocker, go on cracking Coolmore Stud Stakes second behind Japonisme. Each-way value at $15.
RISK: CHAUTAUQUA (Race 6, No. 1)
His get-back style, top weight and vagaries of the straight don’t add up to a $2.50 chance.
TRAINER: CHRIS WALLER
Waller’s gang tackles the Newmarket Handicap with three top-class sprinters and has Flemington specialist Preferment in Australian Cup.
JOCKEY: HUGH BOWMAN
Bowman is the best in the business. Worth noting he has flown south for Flemington’s Super Saturday.

SHAYNE O’CASS (Sportsman)
ROSEHILL
THE BANKER: LARAPINETA (Race 3, No. 16)
Is a Sepoy filly out of a Stratum mare who is herself out of a Rory’s Jester mare; that’s three Golden Slippers by my count! This filly was sold for $350K at the Magic Millions. That’s the background — the most important thing is that she can run. Her two trials have been beyond impressive. Never easy to win on debut, let alone a stakes race but I remember John Hawkes doing it with Shaft in the Silver Slipper one year.
IN THE FRAME: TATOOSH (Race 6, No. 2)
Is a tough little bugger and stakes-placed too so he’s got every right to be in a group 2 race up to his ears. Bit ordinary first-up at Wyong but he wants 1500m on the big track.
THE RISK: ANOTHER COCKTAIL (Race 4, No. 4)
Has been a shade unlucky here and there and hasn’t been outright poor in any of his four Australian runs but you can’t keep following them down a well when they go around at 7/2 every start.
TRAINER: PAUL PERRY
If you like roughies, and who doesn’t, Paul Perry’s your man on Saturday; I have him down for Tatoosh and also a massive form reversal on the agenda for Ghost Protocol in the 1900m race.
JOCKEY: COREY BROWN
Brown’s got some nice rides, well worth the trip down from Singapore. Exhibit A — Ghisoni.
NATHAN EXELBY (The Courier-Mail)
GOLD COAST
BANKER: WILD ‘N’ FAMOUS (Race 8, No. 4)
Had been costly in Sydney, but found the perfect race to get some confidence back last time and duly delivered. Figures were solid for the day and suspect he can take another leap forward off that from the good gate. Hard to see him missing the top three.
IN THE FRAME: TIGER TEES (Race 7, No. 1)
Might face a career defining moment here. Only average in Sydney in January and now given his chance in the weakest race he has contested for a few years. His best would be easily good enough to cart the 61kg, but how far off that level of form is he?
RISK: SPIRIT OF HEAVEN (Race 3, No. 1)
Is clearly the best horse in the race and turned in a ripper fresh. BUT, she’s 574 days and 9 runs between wins, missed a run last month when she was scratched because of the hard track and goes up to 59kg with no claim. Chance yes, but there’s a bit against lining up for the skinny odds.
TRAINER: JOHN ZIELKE
Shoots for a hat-trick of Saturday two-year-old wins with three different runners. Spot The Diff looks well placed to continue the stable’s winning ways.
JOCKEY: MATT MCGILLIVRAY
After a mostly dry summer, things are starting to turn around again for talented apprentice Matt McGillivray. Landed a double midweek to make it 10 wins from his last 50 rides and has some leading chances at the Coast, headed by Mr Epic and Egyptian Ruler
