Supercars driver Fabian Coulthard says he has a better life balance than ever before

Fabian Coulthard says a better life balance has him better than ever before as he chases a career-best finish in the Supercars Championship.

FABIAN Coulthard says a better life balance has him better than ever before as he chases a career-best finish in the Supercars Championship.

The DJR Team Penske driver holds fourth in the championship going into his home race, the Gold Coast 600, with a third-place finish overall in 2017 his best finish since arriving on the Supercars scene in 2004.

Coulthard was relegated to last at Bathurst for his part in the team’s “go slow” tactics.

Life is vastly different to the one he lived in his maiden season in the championship, with the biggest change coming with the arrival of his twins Carter and Mackenzie, who will turn 2 the week before the Gold Coast 600.

Coulthard said welcoming his children with partner Becky in 2017 had given him added perspective on life and his racing career.

“Being a race driver you have to be an element of selfish,” Coulthard said.

Once you put your helmet on that’s all you know. That is the switch from being a family man to being a racing driver, it’s a healthy balance.

“No matter what weekend you have had you take your helmet off and put your dad hat on and your focus becomes your children. It’s a pretty awesome balance.”

TOUGH YEAR BUT SVG IS LOVING IT

Coulthard celebrated back-to-back wins this year, standing on top of the podium in the second race of the Phillip Island SuperSprint and the opening race of the Perth SuperNight.

Coulthard said it had been a challenge dealing with the changing aerodynamic structures imposed on the team but was happy with how they had handled it.

“It’s been a pretty good year,” Coulthard said.

“We have had a good car throughout the year, won races, stood on the podium a lot.

“They have clipped our wings as we have gone along. It’s probably not quite as good as it was at the start of the year but we just have to maximise our package, what we have at the moment.

“The guys have worked hard in the off-season to create a great car for us and they certainly did that.”
