SEASON OVER? COAST FOOTBALL CHAOS

Coast football was thrown into a spin on Friday night when Burleigh’s Facebook post suggested Football Gold Coast had pulled the pin, a claim that would impact thousands of players.

FGC general manager Damien Bresic on Saturday emphatically denied the claims the coronavirus lockdown had ended the season.

Burleigh president John Bray told the Bulletin yesterday that the club was “not trying to take on Football Gold Coast” and was simply trying to suggest that the season that club members committed to at the start of the campaign was no more.

Bray insisted that the club’s main priority was to refund members as soon as possible but confirmed Burleigh would be interested in participating in a revived season.

‘NOT AS WE KNOW IT’: BOLD CHANGE TO GOLD COAST FOOTBALL SEASON

“We might have used slightly the wrong terminology but in essence, all we’re trying to do as a club is be proactive and if people are struggling, get their money back to them as soon as they can and get that process moving,” he said.

“The fact of the matter is, Gold Coast football is going to refund all of the fees of charges so if they’re not cancelling the season, they’re going to modify the season.

“If a new competition comes up, we’ll have a look at it and be as keen as mustard.

“You can play on words as much as you like but again, if something comes up, we’ll have a look at it and it’ll be up to individuals and the club but we want to participate and want to play the game.”

Bray also rejected a notion from Bresic that Burleigh’s statement was the product of a club “who didn’t listen.”

“I think we did listen,” he said.

“I don’t think we’re a rouge club, I think we’re trying to be proactive.

“We’re not trying to take on Football Gold Coast, we’re not trying to enter into a big stoush with them but we may have gotten some of the terminology wrong.”
