Having bid farewell to most of last year’s squad in the wake of coach Lee Vernon’s switch to Nerang, Broadbeach marked the start of the Robinson era with a 2-1 extra-time win over North Star in Round 3 of the Cup on Saturday.

With a squad comprised largely of players from the 2019 Premier League reserves and Coast League One teams, the Dolphins opened the scoring through Kaorushon Westell before substitute striker Yudai Yamamoto delivered the matchwinner after scores were locked at 1-1 at full-time.

The midfield duo of Relja Zoric and Jean-Luc Fernandez were again impressive ahead of Saturday’s Premier League opener away to Palm Beach and Robinson said his rebuild was on the right path.

“The boys played really well. They dug deep, we had opportunities to win the game in normal time and we just didn’t convert,” Robinson said.

“We’ve got a lot of depth and a young squad so we’ll go as far as we can (in the Cup). It’s a good learning opportunity for the guys as well, a knockout comp is a little bit different from the league.

MACUACE MAKES MARK TO LEAD REDLANDS ROUT

“The boys I’m working with, they’re all coachable. We had a lot of the boys coming through the reserves and then we’ve picked up players from everywhere - some from the NPL that maybe weren’t getting an opportunity at the NPL level, some from the Coast League.

“They’re young and majority have had couple of years together. We’re looking forward to (the season).”

While Burleigh Heads dominated all-comers to claim last season’s Premier League double, Robinson said new threats had emerged in 2020.

“I think there’s probably three clubs that you’ve got to be banking on finishing top four,” he said.

KNIGHTS CAPTAIN NICHOLS OPENS UP ON PLAYING FUTURE

“Obviously Surfers (Paradise) will be favourites because on paper they’ve got the strongest squad; Nerang is pretty much Broadbeach’s first team from last season; and the other team that’s really gone out and strengthened with (the signing of) Henrique is Coomera.

“Everyone else is playing for fourth and trying to stay up. The FFA Cup has come at a bit of a cost to us because we’ve got 4-5 injuries but with the squad we’ve got, there’s a not a lot of difference between the first team and reserves team.”
