ENGLISHMAN Andrew Robinson is hoping to use his appointment as Broadbeach United coach to usher in a new era for the Gold Coast Premier League heavyweights.
With Lee Vernon severing ties with the club in September after coaching the Premier League side for 10 of the past 11 seasons, Robinson was earlier this month unveiled as the man to fill his shoes in 2020.
A former player at UK clubs Carlisle United, Gretna and Gateshead FC, Robinson has taken over the most dominant Premier League force of the past decade, with a core group of players delivering four championships and six grand final wins since 2009.

However, with a handful of players a chance of following Vernon to new club Nerang, Robinson said next season could represent a changing of the guard for a team that exited in the first week of this year’s finals.
“As soon as one door closes another door opens. Some of the players there last year may move on to pastures new … but there’s an opportunity there for new players to come in,” said Robinson, himself a member of multiple title-winning teams after joining the Dolphins in 2009.
“It’ll be a fresh start for the new boys. Over the years Broadbeach has been a closed shop because we’ve had such a tight squad.

“Players will be given an opportunity whereas in previous years maybe they’ve been stuck in reserves … maybe squad players at other clubs or youth players who want to make that transition into senior football.
“There’s quite a few players who have reached out to me since I’ve taken the job. With the players that I’ve spoken to, could we challenge for the top four? Definitely.
“But the Gold Coast is a merry-go-round and you never know what will happen.
A UEFA B Licence holder, Robinson began his coaching career in Broadbeach’s junior ranks 10 years ago before stints with senior sides at Bond University and Magic United.
Now working as general manager for The Magic Group, he said he was looking forward to a fresh challenge with the Dolphins.

“This is what I do for a day job, I’ve been coaching for 10 years in Australia. Long term, I was always going to be involved in coaching but maybe it’s come about a little bit sooner than I thought,” he said.
“We’ve already had a senior meeting (with the players) and we spoke about where we are, where we want to be and how we get there. We’ve got to take stock with the players we have come January-February.”
