SO impressive was Palm Beach’s first half, Gold Coast Premier League performance against Surfers Paradise last weekend, coach Brett Budwee started receiving text messages from players currently plying their trade for other clubs.

In a game between two contenders that had it all, Palm Beach looked likely to run away with the match before the Sharks ran out of legs in the second half largely due to a midweek catch up clash against Southport.

“It was some of the best football we’ve played all year,” Budwee said.

“After the game, I was getting text messages from players at other clubs saying how impressed with the game they were with our first half.

“The midweek loss to Southport took a bit out of us but we got no points off Surfers Paradise last year so it was pleasing to draw against them and bounce back.

“I have a few lads who work in construction that started at 5am and came straight from the construction site to the football pitch and I was asking them to give me there best at 10:30pm at night but that’s part and parcel of playing a catch-up game.

“We’re still working on our consistency because we’ve put a few good performances together and we’ve carried a few injuries into our last few games so hopefully we can string a few wins together and remain in the top four.”

Budwee also noted the impact of the crowd and the support Palm Beach received from their junior players to will the home side back into the game.

Palm Beach’s quest for consistency continues on Saturday with their Round 5 clash against Burleigh Heads.

And despite the 2019 double winners languishing with only one win, a draw and two losses, Budwee refuses to underestimate the Bulldogs.

“Burleigh at Burleigh is one of the toughest fixtures in my 15 years of coaching,” he said.

“It doesn’t matter what team they put on the park, they’re a different beast at home and we’re not buying into any talk of them losing players.”
