CROCS CAN’T MAKE CUP FINALS
They downed Helensvale Pacific Pines on Sunday to remain within touching distance of the Kookaburra Cup’s top four but I’m putting a line through Coomera Hope Island’s finals chances.
A day earlier, the Crocs were rolled for 67 inside 28 overs against Southport Labrador, the fourth time this season they’ve been skittled for 96 or less.
While they can beat anyone on their day, the difference between their best and worst is too great to be a playoff hope.

BURDON BOUND FOR HIGHER HONOURS
After threatening to register a maiden Queensland Premier Cricket ton en route to four half-centuries earlier this season, Gold Coast all-rounder Hugo Burdon finally broke through with a classy 115 in the weekend’s losing effort against Valleys.
The 18-year-old now has 547 runs at 39.07 this season and 17 wickets at 22.53 with his legspin.

ALL-ROUNDER CATS’ UNSUNG HERO
While the likes of captain Kyle Brockley, batsman Steve Baker and fast bowler Reece McDonald generally steal the headlines at Broadbeach Robina, all-rounder Dhanushka Mitipolarachchi looms as a crucial figure in their Kookaburra Cup premiership defence.
His fighting knock of 74 helped the Cats claw to a defendable total of 188 on day one of their battle with Queens on Saturday, taking his season tally to 221 runs at 31.57 and 18 wickets at 9.67.

DOLPHINS STILL IN FINALS HUNT
While victory over Valleys on the weekend would have moved Gold Coast into the top four of Queensland Premier Cricket’s two-day competition, they are still well-placed for a finals berth.
Sitting sixth, three of their last four fixtures are against teams lower than them – Wynnum-Manly (eighth), Toombul (12th) and Sandgate-Redcliffe (10th) – while their toughest assignment looks to be away to second-placed Wests on February 15/22.

MADELEY LEADING BAY REVIVAL
Runaway Bay have now won their past three Kookaburra Cup games and are in with a chance to make it four against Palm Beach Currumbin this Saturday.
Key to their revival has been fast bowler Matt Madeley, who has taken eight wickets in that time at an average of 15.12.
Throw in his unbeaten 35 from no.8 in Sunday’s one-day victory over Alberton Ormeau and he is quickly becoming one of the Seagulls’ most important players.
