CENTAURS SEAL THE DOUBLE

Queens became the first side since 2012-13 to claim back-to-back Kookaburra Cup crowns when they downed Surfers Paradise in the 2016-17 final.

The last team to achieve that feat before the Centaurs was Broadbeach Robina in 2011-12 and 2012-13, who remain on track to repeat those heroics this season.

COAST’S LONG WAIT FOR GLORY COMES TO AN END

Gold Coast’s 19-year wait for Queensland Premier Cricket success came to an end in 2008-09 as a star-studded Dolphins side beat Wests in a low-scoring final.

Formed in 1990-91, the Dolphins won outright thanks to names like Andrew Symonds, Scott Brant, Andrew Robinson, Alister McDermott, Damian Wallis and Brad Ipson.

A Cricket Gold Coast third grade fixture turned to tragedy in November when long-serving Queens player Vikas Malhotra collapsed and died of a heart attack midgame.

The local cricket community has since rallied around the 42-year-old’s family, launching a GoFundMe page to support his wife and two sons.

FINS WOMEN BREAK THROUGH FOR MAIDEN TITLE

After five failed grand final attempts, Gold Coast finally broke through for a maiden piece of Katherine Raymont Shield silverware in last season’s Twenty20 decider against Valleys.

Sitting top of the one-day ladder, the Dolphins are well placed to add to the trophy cabinet come March.

CATS CLAW WAY INTO HISTORY BOOKS

Broadbeach Robina entered the Cricket Gold Coast history books last season with a recordbreaking five premierships that helped deliver the Club Championship.

The success was highlighted by the Cats’ first Kookaburra Cup title since 2012-13 after overpowering minor premiers Alberton Ormeau in the final.
