Mitch Marsh is going nuts in the IPL with his latest innings of 81 continuing a powerhouse streak

Mitch Marsh overcame a back injury to be allowed to play in the IPL as a batter only and has begun taking down every bowler he faces.

Marsh powers Super Giants to IPL win

The early days of this IPL season have been dominated by Mitch Marsh who has proven to be a white-ball powerhouse in the months after being axed from the Test team.

Marsh was dumped during last summer’s series against India after recording six single figures scores in seven innings, and missed selection for the tour of Sri Lanka which followed.

He was then ruled out of the ODI tour of Sri Lanka and the Champions Trophy due to “lower back pain and dysfunction”, the injury relating to a disc problem he had been managing.

But Marsh was cleared to take-up his $623,000 contract with his new IPL new team Lucknow Super Giants as a batter-only and has shown his value in spades.

The powerhouse right-handed has blasted four fifties among his 267 runs, which is the second-most in the tournament, including his last start 81 off just 48 balls opening for Lucknow.

It continued a stunning run of form for Marsh who has whacked the most fours (28), the second most sixes (15) and only teammate Nicholas Pooran has scored more runs in the tournament than the “Bison” who is lighting it up.

Marsh has also been aided by the IPL’s sub-rule, able to sit down and watch after his latest effort.

“I have never been more motivated to score runs, I can just go sit on by back side and enjoy,” he said.

When Marsh, Australia’s T20 captain, was included on the Cricket Australia contract list for 2025-26, selection chief George Bailey was keen to suggest his red-ball career was not done, noting the kind of power he has shown in the IPL as a weapon.

“I still think there’s an incredibly exciting skill set there with the bat, the way he can rip a game open,” he said.

“If you look ahead to a team like England and the way they play their cricket and the way they seem to be framing up their team, I think he’s got a skill set there that could be helpful as well.

“I still think he’s got an incredibly important role to play.

“He’s had some injury issues, and towards the back end of the summer he was battling with his back a little bit.

“It’s an ongoing conversation as to where bowling may or may not fit into his international cricket going forward. I still think he can play an incredibly important role in setting that (T20) team up and hopefully leading that team to some success in the T20 World Cup.”
