‘Catch of the summer’: Sean Abbott’s ‘superman’ catch stuns Big Bash

Sean Abbott can lay serious claim to having taken the best catch of the summer after he went full superman mode in the Big Bash.

The Big Bash has produced yet another contender for the catch of the summer — this time courtesy of the Sydney Sixers’ Sean Abbott.

After becoming the BBL’s all-time leading wicket taker, Abbott took an absolute screamer of a catch to continue his sensational form in the tournament.

Taking on the Brisbane Heat at the SCG on Wednesday, he didn’t have much time to react when gun Heat opener Chris Lynn smacked a delivery from Ben Dwarshuis in the fourth over.

But fielding at cover, Abbott launched himself fully off the ground into a horizontal superman position and somehow managed to pluck the ball in his right hand.

He was immediately mobbed by his Sixers teammates as Lynn was sent back to the pavilion for just two.

Lynn’s jaw nearly hit the floor when he saw Abbott had taken the catch.

The spectacular catch left fans and commentators stunned, with many comparing it to Jake Fraser-McGurk’s one-handed leaping catch on the boundary earlier in BBL11.

“You are kidding me,” former Australian fast bowler Brett Lee said on Fox Cricket.

“Sean Abbott, superman!

“That’s the catch of the summer.”

“Sean Abbott is one of the best fielders in the country,” Brad Haddin added.

“Chris Lynn has smashed this and superman as you said one hand behind him!”

Brendon Julian believed Abbott’s catch was the best of the tournament so far.

“Amazing! That is unbelievable and he can’t believe it,” he said.

“I thought (Jake) Fraser-McGurk at Marvel was a great catch, but I’ve got to say that’s better.”

“He’s the only one catching that,” Sixers teammate Daniel Hughes said of Abbott’s feat of athleticism.

“He’s a hell of an athlete. He’s an absolute animal. That was a hell of a catch.”

After an early collapse, the Heat managed to stumble their way to a total of 105, with Abbott claiming four wickets himself.

The Sixers’ run chase didn’t get off to a smooth start as they lost both openers for ducks and collapsed to be 8/47 in the 13th over.

But Dwarshuis combined with Abbott to put on an unlikely 59-run stand to see the Sixers over the line in a tricky chase.

Needing one run off the very last delivery, Abbott flicked the ball through mid-wicket to the boundary and secured a remarkable victory for the Sixers.

He was named player of the match for his heroics with both bat (37 runs) and ball (4/31).
