Bond University best and fairest and former Brisbane Roar player Lucinda Pullar on the radar of Gold Coast Suns

A former professional footballer is now on the radar of the Gold Coast Suns AFLW coaches. Lucinda Pullar gave up a burgeoning career to study medicine and it led her to Australian Rules where another individual honour has highlighted her status as one of the best in the region.

TWO students have collected the best and fairest awards for the first time at the Bond University AFL Blue and Gold Awards.

Lucinda Pullar and Rhys King have massive futures on and off the field after claiming their respective medals.

In previous years the awards have gone to non-student members of the club.

Pullar, 22, gave up her burgeoning soccer career to focus on studying medicine at Bond.

The former Brisbane Roar midfielder is in her third year of study and set to begin medical placements in Brisbane and the Gold Coast next year.

While university has been a focus, Pullar has been on the radar of the Gold Coast Suns after previously representing the Australian schoolgirls soccer team and playing on a scholarship at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

“When I came to Bond I had to stop playing soccer but I felt lost without sport,” Pullar said.

“I don’t know my life without sport and that team culture. It is such an important part of me as a person and I think it will make me a better professional in my career, working in teams and getting different perspectives.

“If an opportunity came to play at that next level in the AFLW it would be hard to say no, but it is certainly not something I’ve dreamt about.

“I would definitely enjoy it but I’m heading into the hospitals next year for placement which I’m super excited for - it’ll be a challenge.”

King was a clear winner in the men’s senior team after polling in all but one game.

The grandson of South Melbourne’s Bill King moved from Albury two years ago thanks to the Riewoldt Family AFL Excellence Scholarship and is finishing his Bachelor of Construction Management and Quantity Surveying.

The 20-year-old still has ambitions of playing in the AFL and has been invited into the training squad of Southport which is set to play in a revamped VFL in 2021.

“I think my leadership skills have come a long way thanks to my time at Bond -- how I lead on the field, how I communicate on the field,” King said.

“I’ve really enjoyed playing at Bond, it’s been a great couple of years and I’ve really enjoyed my degree too.

“Being invited to trial for Southport and maybe play in the VFL is very exciting -- they’ll be a very talented side.

“It would be a massive test playing at the VFL level and it might be a rude shock because I think it will be one of the most competitive leagues in Australia.”
