THE MATCHES

Cairns SHS held on to claim the third place play-off trophy in a dramatic clash this morning.
Cairns won 2-1, with both teams enduring a scoreless second half after Cairns had done early damage in the first half.

It was an exciting clash with Cairns pushing to extend its lead and Helensvale SHS straining to draw level.
Hats off to both goalkeepers who had a busy morning, and also to Cairns defender Hayley Campbell who marked up nice and tight against Helensvale striker Olivia Driene, a renowned finisher.
There were near misses on both sides, with Cairns SHS’s Montana Wilkes almost getting past the Helensvale goalie Shakira Tranquille, while Helensvale desperately tried to get Campbell quality ball.
Cairns opened the day with two wonderful early goals to Julianna-Bree Talbot-Cooke and Taryn Knight, with Knight’s goal a sensation strike.
Knight shot from some distance, lofting a curling ball into the top left corner.
From 2-nil down, Helensvale SHS fought back when Olivia Driene swooped on an empty goal box to score.
Cairns had attempted to clear the ball but resolute Helensvale defence led to a rebound into the box where Driene ran for all she was worth from the midfield to tap the ball in.
Palm Beach Currumbin State High v Ignatius Park College (Boys Third Place Playoff)
PBC SHS finished the match like a steam train to turn a 1-nil deficit into a 2-1 play-off win.
PBC produced a succession of goal scoring chances in the last quarter of the game after Jaxon Sciuto had opened the scoring for Ignatius Park with a blazing effort early after the opening whistle.
It was an even first half featuring aggressive defence and desperation at both ends of the field, with Ignatuis Park pair Aiden Masatto Jacob Sexton and PBC’s Jed Thelwall both lofting shots over the keeper’s heads with spectacular all-or-nothing efforts.
But Cairns did draw level, with Thelwall slamming home a spot kick to level things up 1-all.
And then Zak McCabe produced a ripper to send his team ahead.
BILL TURNER TROPHY: Brisbane State High v Chancellor State College (Girls)
A never say die attitude has helped Brisbane State High School claim victory in the Bill Turner Trophy grand final against Chancellor State College, 3-1.
It was an evenly contested game in the first half with both sides showing great skills, speed and teamwork.
BSHS’s Grace Kuilamu was the first to find the net but Chancellor fought back with Dakota Hawkins levelling the score - which is how it remained for the rest of the half.
It was an exciting start to the second half with both sides proving they were determined to bring home the trophy.
BSHS struck first in the second half.
Chancellor came close several times but BSHS’s determined defenders made it almost impossible for them to find the net.
Kuilamu locked up the game and victory with her second goal for the final, just moments after being denied due to an offside ruling.
Murrumba State Secondary College vs Kelvin Grove State College
Kelvin Grove State Secondary College edged out Murrumba State Secondary College after a close battle to win the Bill Turner Cup 2-1.
Murrumba State Secondary College started the game strong, pressing with great energy early in the first half making it very hard for Kelvin Grove to get out of their own half.
When Kelvin Grove did manage to break Murrumba State Secondary College down they were able to convert their chance with a rocket goal from Austin O’Brien-Sievuha.
Murrumba State Secondary College’s Luke Skelhorn came close to levelling the score three times - first off the back of some brilliant individual skill, second off a header and the third was stopped by the keeper.
Kelvin Grove again proved strong on the counter flying down the field before Emmett Logan shot one past the keeper to put them ahead 2-0.
Despite several more promising passages of play Murrumba State Secondary College were unable to find the net in the first half, which finished 2-0.
After a hotly contested start to the second half Murrumba State Secondary College’s Jack Bosward managed to find their first point of the game late in the second half.
The goal gave them a fresh boost of energy with Murrumba State Secondary College desperate to find an equalising goal before the clock ran out but despite their best efforts Kelvin Grove were just too strong in defence.
