Bill Turner Cup finalists: Meet the Captain

LIVESTREAM SCHEDULE: The Bill Turner Cup and Trophy football finals’ finale will be livestreamed by News Corp on Wednesday and Thursday. Today, Meet the Captains

The time-honoured Bill Turner football finals will be played on Wednesday and Thursday, and News Corp will be there, livestreaming every minute of the schoolboy and schoolgirl season finale.

The www.couriermail.com.au, the Gold Coast Bulletin and News Corp affiliates around the state will livestream eight finals - culminating in Thursday afternoon’s Bill Turner Cup (boys) and Bill Turner Trophy (girls) state grand finals.

Meet the captains of each school who will be leading their respective teams into action.

MEET THE CAPTAINS

School: Helensvale State High School

Captain’s full name: Chloe Camilleri

Position: Central Midfield

Club: Coomera Colts FC

Lachlan McDonell, Director of Sport Academy said: “Chloe Camilleri has a large presence within the playing group on and off the field. An advocate for gender equality and a source of inspiration and confidence in midfield, she has been a driving force in leading her team to the Bill Turner State Final Series. Chloe currently plays for Coomera Colts FC in both the 16 & 17 years age divisions.

School: Brisbane State High School

Captain’s name: Eve Lee

Position: Right back/centre back

Club: Eastern Suburbs FC

Coach Monica Tracy said: “Eve Lee has led her team to the state finals of the Bill Turner Trophy. Current Eastern Suburbs player, Eve is one of the senior members of the team, and has always led by example.

School: Chancellor State College

Captain’s name: Emily Ferroussat

Position: Midfielder.

Club: Under 15 QAS side.

Football co-ordinator Jeremy Stewart said: “Emily is an energetic box to box midfielder that can score goals and will lead the Chancellor State College side. She has represented Sunshine Coast at the recent under 15 State Championships at Hervey Bay and plays a key role if Chancellor is to be successful at the state finals.’’

School: Palm Beach Currumbin

Captain’s name: James Durrington

Position: Centre midfield

Club: Gold Coast United

Representative teams across all sports (2021): Football Queensland TSP reprsentative.

A few sentences on the captain:

Coach Shane Robinson says: “James is a natural leader and a very composed midfielder. He has gained valuable experience this year by playing up an age group in the under 16’s in the NPL for Gold Coast United. A very talented player and a top young man.’’

School: Kelvin Grove State College

Captain’s name: Rylan Brownlie

Position: Striker

Club: Brisbane Roar

Representative teams across all sports (2021): Met North under 16’s (as a 14 year old)

Jason Tobin, Football Excellence Co-ordinator said: “Rylan plays in the under 16 Brisbane Roar Academy team two years above his age group. He has scored 14 goals so far this Bill Turner campaign and is also one of the Colleges best short distance sprinters.’’

Co-captain’s name: Tully Heatley

Position: Centre Midfield

Club: Edge Hill Tigers Football Club

Representative teams across all sports (2021): Under 15 Qld School Girls, Under 15 Peninsula.

Coach Martin Fehlberg says: “Tully is a very clever player who picks up the tempo of the game before controlling it. She combines well in midfield and ably sets up attackers in the final third. Tully knows where the goal is and her heading capability is improving. Her development in the past two years has seen her reach Queensland standard for her age group.

School: Cairns State High School

Captain’s name: Julianna-Bree Talbot-Cooke

Position: Centre Forward

Club: Leichhardt Lions Football Club

Representative teams across all sports (2021): Under 15 Peninsula

Coach Martin Fehlberg says: Julianna-Bree is an intimidating number 9. She is athletic and imposing. She holds the ball up well bringing in players around her. She knows where the goal is and she is capable of scoring with both feet. Defensively she organises those around her and tries to win the ball early in the attacking half.

Coaches comment: “Lachlan is a natural born leader and has been an integral part of our 2021 Bill Turner Cup Campaign. He has shown this by his composure in playing out from the back, strength in one-on-one battles and being deceptively quick across the ground to help his teammates.’’

Captain: Blake Koitka

Position: Goalkeeper

Club: Townsville Warriors Football Club

Representative teams: Under 16 NQ Schoolboys Football team, under 14 Football Queensland North Talent Support Program, NQ under 19 water polo shadow, interschool swimming and

athletics teams, NQ School Athletics team trials for 800m and high jump

The coach says: “Blake is a talented goalkeeper who leads the lines for his successful school, rep and club teams. He has also proven himself two years above his own age in rep teams and

was selected in the NQ Schoolboys under 16 team this year. Blake is also a middle school

leader with a good academic record.’’

The Bill Turner Cup competition started in 1979 as a boys 15-years-and-under football competition in northern NSW and has grown nationwide.

It was named after Bill Turner OA, a music teacher at then Booragul High School who was one of several teachers from the Lake Macquarie and Newcastle region to start the under 15 competitions.
