South Coast Netball has continued its reign of Queensland School Sport, comfortably taking out the 13-15 years and 16-19 years divisions at this year’s State Championships.
Held on the Sunshine Coast, South Coast were undoubtedly the team to beat in both age groups, having won consecutive golds since 2020 and 2021 respectively.
Under-19s head coach Deanne Hamilton, who took her first team (under-15s) to gold in 2020, said it was clear the target was on their backs from day one.
“It always hard to be the region that is being chased down and reigning champions,” she said.
“I think their maturity was on display for all 12 games.
“They took the competition in their stride, got given feedback, applied that and it showed in the results on court.”
Hamilton said the sides were commended for their display of talent on-court and sportsmanship on the sidelines.
“The most pleasing part of this year’s competition was the commentary from our opposition about how composed our players were and how they were a delight to watch on court.
“It really showed the teamwork between players and that got them over the line in terms of motivation, playing each game for each other.”
That very teamwork pushed 12 athletes into the ‘possibles and probables’ trials, with eight earning selection into the relevant division’s State Merit team.
Te Hani Ashcroft, Ava Barrett, Olivia Davidson, Harlow Faaee and Brooklyn Kingi were named in the under-15s side while Layla Mathias was given a shadow position.
Roxy Rhind, Aaliyah Frescon-Sheppard and Georja Davies were selected for the under-19s honours.
“There were also a lot of new faces in both age groups and all the girls stood up to do a fantastic job,” Hamilton said
“It has been a pleasure to watch the number of young athletes come up through the junior ranks and into our regional team.
“A lot of them play a great deal of community sport and so it has been wonderful to see that growth.”
For the first time in many years, there was no one school that dominated a team.
“They were able to click into gear and get their systems going pretty quickly.
“Now that they’re at this age group, they’ve had the experience on court with each other elsewhere and can bring it together for this level of tournament when it matters most.
“It helps build team spirit.”
Voted by opposition coaches throughout the tournament, Harlow Faaee and Roxy Rhind received the MVP award for their respective age groups.
One of the youngest in the under-19s side, Rhind had one message to herself heading into games:
“I just told myself to stay calm.
“I didn’t feel nervous or pressured at any time because I knew we had a good connection with each other,” she said.
Rhind’s twin sister Maddie was also in the team
“It makes it even more fun to play alongside my sister, to know how she feels beside me.”
It seems neither twin is one to let pressure get in the way
“I don’t really get nervous, all the girls have my back on court,” (Maddie) Rhind said
“It’s just amazing to be in a team that can take it out back-to-back while learning from the experiences of older teammates.”
