The Tasmanian Devils won’t enter the AFL until 2028, but that doesn’t mean you can’t cheer on a Tassie team this season.
In fact, Tasmanians could form the foundation of a winning team in SuperCoach, Australia’s biggest fantasy game.
Here are five to consider for your starting squad.
RYLEY SANDERS (WESTERN BULLDOGS)
SuperCoach price: $339,100 (FWD/MID)
The North Launceston product is ready to explode in his second AFL season.
Sanders scored 99 SuperCoach points in his second senior game last year, but was made to earn his place by coach Luke Beveridge, donning the substitute vest four times and spending time in the VFL – where he put up huge numbers.
After a brilliant summer on the track, he was one of the Dogs’ best in the practice match against Essendon, showcasing his enormous talent.
COLBY McKERCHER (NORTH MELBOURNE)
SuperCoach price: $476,900 (DEF)
McKercher is also entering his second season, after a debut year that included five scores of more than 100 SuperCoach points.
After starting his career at half-back, the former Launceston junior star is poised to move up the field in 2025, following the footsteps of another Kangaroos young gun, Harry Sheezel.
McKercher will be taking fewer kick-ins from behinds this season, but kicking the ball inside 50 and hitting the scoreboard are heavily rewarded in the SuperCoach scoring system.
The former No.2 draft pick is a future SuperCoach star, the only question is when he becomes a must-have selection. Could it be 2025?
JAMES LEAKE (GWS GIANTS)
SuperCoach price: $119,900 (DEF)
McKercher’s junior Launceston teammate took a different path to the AFL, and has had to wait longer for his crack at the big time.
Leake spent 2024 playing in the VFL for the Giants, with his form putting him on the verge of senior selection after he was moved to the midfield in the closing rounds of the year.
An AFL debut is expected to come early in 2025 after being a standout on the track over pre-season, with openings in the Giants’ team thanks to departures plus injuries and suspensions.
If he’s named in round 1 he could be one of the best cheapies on offer in defence.
SAM BANKS (RICHMOND)
SuperCoach price: $252,500 (MID)
The departure of star rebounder Dan Rioli creates an opportunity in Richmond’s backline, and Banks could be the man to fill it.
The running machine from Clarence – the same junior club as Jack Riewoldt – continues a long tradition of Tasmanian Tigers.
He has played 21 games since being recruited with pick 29 in the 2021 draft, and will be looking to take his game to the next level as Richmond banks its future on a talented group of youngsters.
ARIE SCHOENMAKER (ST KILDA)
SuperCoach price: $270,500 (DEF)
The Launceston native made a strong impression in his four games last season and has an opportunity to stamp himself as a regular member of St Kilda’s defence in 2025.
With Josh Battle know at the Hawks, there is an opening in the backline and Schoenmaker could be a bargain pick in SuperCoach is he gets the nod from coach Ross Lyon.
Schoenmaker’s biggest weapon is his booming left boot, and effective long kicks are one of the best ways to score in SuperCoach.
