THE Gold Coast Suns have slumped to a 96-point loss to the Melbourne Demons and could be forced to finish the season without any of their preferred tall forwards.
If Gold Coast were hoping to convince the AFL they deserved more fixtures at the game’s spiritual home, they did themselves no favours after falling 21.17 (143) to 7.5 (47) in front of 23,072 spectators in their only appearance at the MCG this year.
The Suns were up against it from the start with key forward Peter Wright limping from the field after just two minutes with after hurting his knee in a marking contest.
It cost the Suns who were already without key defenders Steven May and Rory Thompson along with key forwards Tom Lynch and Sam Day who won’t return this year.
May will be due back from suspension next week while defender Rory Thompson is a chance to return from hamstring tightness.
It could mean May is sent forward, something coach Stuart Dew did in the late stages against Carlton last week, with Leslie an option to partner Thompson at the back.
Wright’s absence forced Jack Leslie to play roles at the back and up forward between stints in the ruck with Jarrod Witts.
It opened the door for the AFL’s highest scoring team to go to town on a Suns team who have scored the least amount of points of any team this season.
The Demons scored on mass, winning the ball at the source before cashing in on repeat entries into Gold Coast’s defensive 50m.
Melbourne have the record for the greatest losing margins in VFL/AFL history, a 190 point loss to Fitzroy in 1979, but they looked on track to rid themselves of it early.
The Demons led by 51 points by the end of the first and increased it at every break. Gold Coast continued to run forward hard but were hurt going the other way on turnover by Melbourne who were too quick in transition for the Queensland side.
Jarrod Harbrow and Lachie Weller looks the most threatening with ball in hand while Alex Sexton managed a career-best five goals of his own despite the weight of possession of Melbourne at the other end of the ground.
Gold Coast are second last on the ladder with four wins this season and the young side could struggle to win another.
The Suns will face reigning premiers Richmond next week before coming up against an improved Brisbane side and then finishing the year off against Geelong.
