Fitzroy Greenwool’s move to Melbourne could be the making of the former Gold Coast Suns academy player

Ex-Gold Coast Suns academy player Fitzroy Greenwool’s shift to Melbourne could be the making of him as a player, according to his former coach.

BROADBEACH QAFL coach Beau Zorko says Fitzroy Greenwool’s shift to Melbourne could be the making of him as a player.

The former Suns academy member made the decision to head south to Victoria after being overlooked at last year’s national draft in a bid to get an opportunity to play at a higher level in front of AFL clubs recruiters.

The 19-year-old forward, who Zorko has previously drawn comparisons to Brisbane’s Charlie Cameron, missed out on selection with VFL club Werribee and has since been trialling with Western Bulldogs’ affiliate Footscray.

Greenwool is a livewire with ball in hand, with good skills, flare and speed to burn.

Greenwool has flourished on the wide open and dry conditions in the state but Zorko said finding a way to show his x-factor in the cooler, wet conditions of Victoria’s smaller fields will be a challenge that could propel him to the AFL.

“He is very exciting when he has got the ball,” Zorko said.

“Will he get the space to move that he gets up here? Possibly not.

“In saying that the one thing from his development viewpoint is he will have to find a way to show the x-factor and that could well be the making of him.

”Part of his development will be finding a way on slightly softer and smaller grounds where there isn’t as much space as Broadbeach or Metricon or where he was used to playing QAFL and NEAFL footy.”

Greenwool hails from Kowanyama, in the Gulf of Carpentaria, and stands at 172cm and weights 58kg.

He joined Gold Coast’s academy in 2018 and was part of their under-19 program in 2019.

Greenwool played 11 NEAFL games for the Suns in 2019, kicking eight goals while averaging 10.5 disposals.
