ROUND 17 BREAKDOWN
N. Daicos, three votes.
They are the words Andrew Dillon will surely read when the count reaches Carlton’s clash with Collingwood in round 17.
Daicos copped some attention from George Hewett but that didn’t phase him as he went on to record 36 disposals and 13 score involvements in a damaging display on Friday night.
A stellar performance sees the Collingwood star extend his lead to six votes on top of the Code Sports Brownlow Predictor.
In second place is Gold Coast’s Noah Anderson who polled two votes in the Suns’ 41-point win over Essendon.
Anderson started slowly in the first half but came home with a wet sail recording 20 disposals and two goals after the major break.
For the Bombers, Zach Merrett was consistent across the four quarters and — despite the loss — did enough to poll the three votes.
It really is a toss of the coin between the two for best-on-ground honours, but we have seen that 40-disposal games rarely get missed by the umpires regardless of the result.
In equal-third spot with Bailey Smith — who of course missed Geelong’s win over Richmond with illness — is Jordan Dawson.
The Adelaide captain played his role against Melbourne in a match where there wasn’t any major standouts apart from Izak Rankine’s match-winning five goals.
Dawson just pips the one vote, while a look down the leaderboard sees Tom Liberatore and Max Holmes both jump into the top 10 after their three-vote games.
CLUB BY CLUB
Aside from the main event, the club counts are always of interest come Brownlow night.
Last year’s winner Patrick Cripps is in a dogfight with Tom De Koning and George Hewett to lead Carlton’s count.
It won’t quite be the 45-vote season we saw in 2024 for the Blues champion — our Brownlow Predictor has him on nine votes so far.
Essendon’s leaderboard is an intriguing one.
Zach Merrett started brilliantly with three best-on-ground performances in his opening four games, but Nic Martin has managed to bridge the gap.
Three votes to the Essendon captain in Round 17 does have him out in front of the club’s count again though.
Ed Richards is currently seventh-favourite to claim the medal, but doesn’t make our top 20 as Tom Liberatore leads the way for the Bulldogs.
At the Power, Zak Butters is making up ground on Connor Rozee after missing the opening three games with a knee issue.
