AFL MRO news: Toby Greene cops another fine, no suspensions from Opening Round

Star GWS captain Toby Greene has found himself in hot water yet again — this time for kneeing a Collingwood player. Watch the incident and see all the Opening Round charges here.

Greater Western Sydney captain Toby Greene’s fines total has soared past $40,000 after he was handed a $10,000 fine for kneeing Collingwood’s Reef McInnes on Monday.

Greene can accept a $6250 fine with a guilty plea but was also handed a $1500 fine ($1000 guilty plea) for careless contact with an umpire.

The two fines represent the 26th and 27th charges of his career as footy’s most charged player in AFL history.

Greene was also fined $5000 for his involvement in the club’s Wacky Wednesday function last year.

And while he will be available for the Giants clash against Melbourne he again showed how clumsy he can be in the incident against McInnes.

As McInnes handballed over his head Greene leapt in the air and bent his right knee and thrust it into the Collingwood defender’s midriff.

He had already been forced to accept $35,600 in fines across his career, so if he accepts guilty pleas for both incidents he will have received $42,750 in fines in his AFL career.

He has also accepted 15 games worth of suspensions and is the most fined player in the AFL.

The AFLPA brokered a deal to lessen first offence fines for players to only $1500 but second, third and fourth offence fines have stayed the same.

His kneeing charge was a third offence so he has been offered a higher fine.

Hawthorn’s Jai Newcombe was also offered a $10,000 fine across the weekend after he tripped Sydney’s Jai Newcombe by foot.

The AFL did not sanction or explain the incident which saw Darcy Cameron push Kieren Briggs in the back in the incident which saw him stumble and hurt his neck on Sunday.

The league’s clear view is that if players have their eyes on the ball in an incident where they use their hands in the marking contest they are not guilty of a reportable offence.

GWS player Lachie Ash was also offered a rough conduct fine ($6250, $3750 with a guilty plea) for an incident against Scott Pendlebury.

There were no suspensions from the weekend
