A potential pick swap frenzy is on the cards for this year’s AFL national draft as clubs clamour over a talented pool of prospects.
The draft is being held over two nights on Wednesday and Thursday, with the first round expected to span 27 selections due to father-son and Academy picks.
Brisbane Lions father-son Levi Ashcroft is tipped to receive a bid within the top three selections, with Gold Coast Suns Academy member Leo Lombard and Essendon Next Generation Academy member Isaac Kako also expected to be among the first dozen picks.
Brisbane Lions Academy midfielder Sam Marshall – who has been invited to the first night of the draft – is tipped to receive a bid around pick 20.
There is much intrigue over which way clubs with top-five selections go.

Richmond is widely expected to select Victorian midfielder-forward Sam Lalor with the No. 1 selection, but has also been weighing up Finn O’Sullivan as another option.
North Melbourne has shopped around pick 2 in an attempt to execute a “slight slide” back in the order, but has yet to find a buyer.
However, a live trade with Adelaide (pick 4) cannot be ruled out on draft night, with the two clubs having discussed that scenario.
The Crows like local prospect Sid Draper, as well as Victorians Jagga Smith and Harvey Langford.
Carlton (pick 3) has been linked to Victorian Finn O’Sullivan, but has expressed significant interest in Draper and Smith.
Melbourne (pick 5) has been linked most strongly to Smith and Langford.
“There’s a range of different emotions,” Smith said of the build up to the draft.
“Right now it’s excitement. I’ve been striving for this ever since I can remember, to be honest. So for it to be right around the corner is really exciting.”
St Kilda is expected to trade out one of its two top-10 picks, potentially for two later first-round selections.
Multiple clubs – including Essendon and North Melbourne – have flagged their interest in trading 2025 draft selections back into this year’s first round.
Richmond is one club which could trade at least one pick into next year, given it holds eight top-30 selections.
One of those picks is the first selection of the second round, which is often highly sought-after if a player that clubs like slides through night one.
In addition to Ashcroft, there look set to be at least three other father-son selections made in the draft.
Carlton has access to twins Ben and Lucas Camporeale, while Adelaide is expected to select marking forward Tyler Welsh.

WHO ARE THE TOP PROSPECTS?
The talent pool for this year’s AFL national draft runs deep. At the start of the season it was all about the midfielders – and the prized No. 1 pick is still expected to come from a group of about six on-ballers at the pointy end of the order. Sam Lalor is the frontrunner of a group that includes Victorians Jagga Smith, Finn O’Sullivan, Levi Ashcroft and Josh Smillie and South Australian gun Sid Draper.
Early expectations are that more players will be drafted this year than last, with 64 prospects having been picked up in the 2023 national draft.
HOW MANY PICKS WILL BE MADE?
There were 64 players picked in the 2023 national draft, but that number is expected to be eclipsed this year.
Recruiters expect around 70 players to be selected in the national draft – from 1044 nominations that have been made.
