Hawthorn’s remarkable rise up the ladder this season was not celebrated by Collingwood as the Magpies eye a strong national draft with fewer top selections than anticipated.

Collingwood’s draft hand has been locked in on the back of the Hawks’ finals exit last weekend.

The Magpies hold picks 33, 48, 51 and 84 – one of the weakest draft hands of any club.

Picks 33 and 51 were both tied to the Hawks, who finished as the sixth-ranked club following their semi-final loss to Port Adelaide.

Hawthorn had ended its 2023 campaign third-last on the ladder.

Had Sam Mitchell’s side only matched that 16th placing this year, Collingwood would have instead been left with picks 23, 41, 48 and 84.

The Magpies received Hawthorn’s second and third-round selections as part of the Jack Ginnivan trade last year.

Collingwood has indicated it is keen to get back into the first-round of this year’s draft, but that is likely to be easier said than done.

Meanwhile, Port Adelaide’s push into a preliminary final has not been ideal for Fremantle as one of the Dockers’ three first-round draft picks gets pushed back.

Port is now the second-ranked team left in the premiership race and Fremantle holds the club’s first-round pick – currently pick 17.

Had the Power lost to Hawthorn in their semi-final, the Dockers would have instead snagged pick 14, alongside picks 9 and 10.

A large number of selections are still set to change hands during the AFL’s trade and free agency period next month, ahead of the AFL National Draft on November 20.

Victorian midfielders Jagga Smith and Finn O’Sullivan remain favourites for the No.1 pick, which is currently held by Richmond.

WHO ARE THE TOP PROSPECTS?

It’s not quite being hailed a ‘Super Draft’, but the talent pool for this year’s AFL national draft certainly runs deep. At the start of the season it was all about the midfielders – and the prized No.1 pick is still expected to come from a group of about six onballers at the pointy end of the order. That group includes Victorians Jagga Smith, Finn O’Sullivan, Levi Ashcroft, Josh Smillie and Sam Lalor, and South Australian gun Sid Draper.

Early expectations are that more players will be drafted this year than last, with 64 prospects having been picked up in the 2023 national draft.
