Twin towers to rise in Broadbeach as part of billion dollar development boom

BROADBEACH’S longstanding Niecon Plaza will be demolished to make way for two super towers, including a flash new retail and dining precinct.

A RELIC of the 1980s development boom is set to be demolished and redeveloped to create an “iconic” two towers under plans now before city leaders.

The plans are part of the new wave of light-rail-linked work at Broadbeach.

Niecon Plaza will be transformed into Albert Ave, a shopping and residential project, including towers of 35 and 28 storeys.

It is earmarked for the last large amalgamated parcel in central Broadbeach and the towers would be tied with an open-air arcade and two-storey podium incorporating retail, food and commercial space.

According to plans lodged with the Gold Coast City Council, the towers would have 244 apartments with 372 bedrooms centred around the retail hub running from Broadbeach Mall to Albert Ave.

There also would be 12 offices for commercial use.

The project has been put forward by Niecon Plaza Pty and Rockdune Pty Ltd, both linked with Brisbane-based developer and investor George Raptis.

A development application was lodged with the council last week and is expected to go before city leaders for approval within months.

Area councillor Paul Taylor confirmed he had met the developers behind the project and said that, subject to approval, it would lead the suburb’s $4 billion development boom.

“This development is really exciting and will change the entire face of Broadbeach and is something we have been waiting quite some time for,” he said. “It is a unique and incredible design which will really make Albert Ave shine and its huge arcade would be great alongside the towers.

“Every city centre needs a periodical refresh and the plaza has stood since the 80s, so this would be a new direction for Broadbeach.”

The Niecon Plaza was built in the 1980s by the Nikiforides family, responsible for several major projects in the area, including the nearby Oracle complex.
