SOUTHPORT Sharks and Gold Coast hospitality giant Mantra Group are combining build a 162-suite hotel aimed at attracting footy teams, doctors and families to the AFL club.

A trendy rooftop bar and unique “sporting suites” overlooking the playing field have been planned for the hotel, which is the latest addition to a massive redevelopment of the Olsen Ave club.

Sharks first received approval for a hotel five years ago and the project is now going ahead, with four construction companies tendering to build it.

President Dean Bowtell said the hotel would capitalise on its location close to the rapidly expanding health and knowledge precinct, near the Gold Coast’s major public and private hospitals, Griffith University and the under-construction Commonwealth Games athletes village.

“We’re looking to service families visiting patients at the hospital, visiting researchers, professors and doctors from the university and families visiting students,” he said.

“We also hope to tap into sports tourism – airing our accommodation with our fitness facilities for pre-season AFL training and training for other sports.

“We have been missing out on trade shows, seminars and conferences because we do not have accommodation on site.”

The eight-storey hotel will be built in two stages, with the $25-million first stage having 120 rooms across four floors and the remaining 42 suites in a second stage.

Two and a half floors of parking and three meeting rooms are also included.

The club has also introduced paid parking for some of its 636 spaces, aimed at easing a critical shortage in the Griffith Uni-Gold Coast University Hospital precinct which is also at the southern point of the proposed light rail extension to Helensvale.

Hundreds of hospital and other workers from the area signed a petition supporting the club’s introduction of more paid parking which was previously allocated for members using club facilities.

Paid parking in the precinct is provided by a private operator at Gold Coast University Hospital for up to $16.50 a day.

Parking company Sure Park objected to the Sharks’ paid parking application but was unsuccessful.

Mr Bowtell said Sharks would charge about $5 a day.

Tenders close on construction next week, with ADCO Constructions, McNab Constructions, RCQ Construction and Condev Construction among the contenders.
