The former home of the Gold Coast Bulletin is set to be transformed into a warehouse storage unit and a ‘state-of-the-art’ wine tasting and storage complex.
National Storage Operations has unveiled plans for the 17,740sq m site on Molendinar’s Southport Nerang Rd.
It will feature two buildings, the largest of which will be three storeys, which will cover 15,736.32sq m and feature the storage units.
“The building will be used as a self-storage facility (which will) provide self-storage rooms of variable sizes, including drive-up spaces (on the) ground-level accessed from the internal central driveway,” a report on the project reads.
“Vehicle access to the building will be via the crossover in the southwest corner of the site. “The building will include an electronic roller door at the vehicular entrance to the internal driveway for security purposes which will facilitate access for customers.
“As part of the proposal, the development includes a circulation driveway around building one, which will support vehicle movement for both buildings connected to the egress crossover in the eastern corner of the site.”
The second, smaller building will have an administration and wine storage facility.
“Building two specialises in the storage of wine products – (it is) a state-of-the-art temperature-controlled facility that serves a range of clients from private collectors to large corporations that trade in wine products,” the report reads.
“An ancillary administration and wine collection area is located on the western side of the
building.
“An ancillary wine tasting area is also adjacent to the carparking area on the eastern
side structure.
“This area is reserved for customers who would like to consume their products.”
It is the latest step towards transforming the site, which was home to the Gold Coast Bulletin from 1978 to September 2013.
The existing buildings were left empty following the newspaper’s relocation to Southport before being sold.
The site has changed hands several times in the past 12 years.
Tony Quinn, former owner of VIP Petfoods and Darrell Lea chocolates, bought it in 2018 for $11.35m and then sold it to Sydney based My Space Consortium in 2021 for $7.535m
Most recently, it was snapped up by National Storage in 2024 for $16.5m, an offer which beat out 10 other bids.
