The Gold Coast City Council has spent more than $800,000 to buy up a 9.9ha site in the hinterland in a sale which has been dubbed a first for the city.

The land, on the Tallebudgera Valley’s Monday Drive, is the fourth to be bought by council in the past two years as part of its environmental buyback scheme. It is the first in which only the environmentally sensitive part of the site was obtained.

Mayor Tom that said acquisition meant the surrounding areas, including houses, were unaffected.

“This land acquisition is another step forward in our commitment to playing our role in looking after our native wildlife and protecting and enhancing their natural habitat on the Gold Coast,” he said.

“Once this land is acquired, the City will restore the natural vegetation and eradicate weeds to help restore the natural habitat for native animals.

“This acquisition ensures we are continuing to help provide safer pathways for wildlife and long-term viability and since 1999 we have spent more than $48.6m acquiring more than 4430ha of land to help conserve our native flora and fauna.”

The Tallebudgera Valley land was deemed to have environmental value because it is a mapped koala habitat and is located “within a pinch point of the Burleigh to Springbrook critical corridor” while being linked to existing conservation areas.

Other recent land purchases include $4.5m for 19ha on Pimpama’s Creek Street in October 2022, $2.2m for 35.7ha on Tallebudgera’s Tallebudgera Connection Road in April 2022 and 1.2ha on Burleigh’s Old Coach road for $1.31m in December 2021.
