Chevron Island development: Giant twin towers planned for exclusive enclave

Residents of one of the Gold Coast’s most exclusive enclaves fear a wave of new towers will choke its streets. SEE THE PLANS

Gold Coast housing prices skyrocket

Residents of one of the Gold Coast’s most exclusive enclaves fear a wave of new towers will choke its streets.

The Bulletin last week revealed plans have been lodged with the Gold Coast City Council for twin towers of 36 and 31-storeys respectively at Chevron Island, the largest single project ever proposed for the suburb.

The project has been put forward by Si Bon Chevron, a company registered to a Southport address whose sole shareholder is 27-year-old Bonogin resident Cassidy Good.

According to the plans the towers will front both Illawong and Dalpura Streets on a 3033sq m site and will replace four two-storey unit blocks.

Bulletin readers and area residents have weighed in on the impact of the 20 new towers pitched for the suburb in recent years.

Fiona said she feared it would be a “nightmare”.

“Traffic already chaos and new buildings already under construction and cars from them increase 10 fold,” she wrote.

“The proposed buildings they plan to knock down for new towers that have people living in them so more homeless people.

“Way to go Gold city council - Need new bridges for traffic even chaos for emergency vehicles as you have to reverse on bridges to let them get thru.”

John wrote that he would “eat his hate” if the tower was built.

“You can’t get the revenues on the apartments in Chevron Island compared to the construction costs of building them,” he wrote.

“Build prices are the same whether it’s beachfront or Chevron Island, yet the sales prices are 40 per cent lower in Chevron.”

They will have 277 units spread across the two towers, with 381 residential carparks across three basement levels.

City planning boss Cr Cameron Caldwell said the project, by far the largest individual development proposed for the suburb, was the latest in a string of new towers on the drawing board for Chevron Island.

“To date, most of these proposed towers have been medium-rise,” he said.

“Very tall tower have been proposed but have also faced construction constraints, particularly with regard to the need for large basements which would be required.

“The Chevron Island community has welcomed the renewal and revitalisation of the village.”

More than 20 towers have been proposed for the island in the past seven years, but only a handful have been built.

With several now under construction, Chevron Island residents have called for the Gold Coast City Council to develop a masterplan for the area and widen the traffic bridges to reduce the congestion which already bring the Thomas Dr thoroughfare to a halt.

The latest to be approved was Aniko Group which last week received the green light for its own $110m, 21-storey tower, which is earmarked for a 1518sq m site on Weemala St.

Construction will begin next year.

Construction of a $110m Chevron Island high-rise will begin in mid-2023 after it was given the green light by city leaders.

The Gold Coast City Council has approved prolific developer Aniko Group’s 21-storey tower, which is earmarked for a 1518sq m site on Weemala St.

It is the company’s first development outside of Hope Island where it has spent more than $500m in the past four years.

Aniko boss George Mastrocostas said work would soon begin to clear the site to make way for the unnamed tower.

“We are extremely happy to have council approval behind us, as we now look to the next phase of delivering our signature dose of luxury to Chevron Island,” he said.

“With all approvals now in place, we are looking forward to carrying the next luxury offering into Chevron Island.

It comes just weeks after the prolific developer unveiled its biggest project – a $1bn, four-tower mega project earmarked for a 1.1342ha site at Seaview Ave next to Pacific Fair Shopping Centre and the Broadbeach public transport hub

It will have four towers of 25, 30, 40 and 45 storeys respectively, which will include more than 5000sq m of premium commercial office space.
