The aircraft was believed to be a Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet, one of the most powerful aircraft in the US military arsenal.
Shock footage, filmed by a ring camera at a nearby residence, showed the jet plummeting as it crashed into San Diego Bay near Naval Station North Island.

CAUSE OF PRIVATE JET CRASH REVEALED
The cause of the Arizona plane crash that killed a pilot on-board a private jet owned by Motley Crue lead singer Vince Neil, and injured three others, has been revealed.
The pilot of the plane has been identified as 78-year-old Marine veteran Joie Vitosky.
A landing gear failure on the Learjet 35A owned by the rock star caused the aircraft to ram into a parked Gulfstream 200 after touching down at Scottsdale Airport, officials said in a release from the City of Scottsdale.
“According to initial reports, the Learjet’s left main landing gear failed upon landing, leading to the collision,” the statement read.
Terrifying footage captured the moment the Motley Crue frontman’s private jet smashed into a parked plane, injuring the rock star’s girlfriend.
The footage showed the Learjet 35A, registered to Neil’s business, Chromed in Hollywood, speeding down the runway before it veered off track, striking a Gulfstream 200 parked at a nearby ramp at Scottsdale Airport in Arizona.
Neil’s girlfriend, Rain Andreani, was on board the plane along with a friend and her pet dogs.
Both women survived and were taken to the hospital with Ms Andreani suffering five broken ribs.
Neil was not on the plane at the time of the crash, a spokesperson confirmed.
“Mr Neil’s thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved, and he is grateful for the critical aid of all first responders assisting today,” his lawyer said.
The New York Post reported that there was speculation that the other plane involved belonged to Hollywood star Vince Vaughn, but this has not been confirmed.
The law firm representing Neil earlier released a statement.
“At 2.39pm local time, a Learjet aircraft Model 35A owned by Vince Neil was attempting to land at the Scottsdale Airport. For reasons unknown at this time, the plane veered from the runway causing it to collide with another parked plane,” the statement said.
“On board Neil’s plane were two pilots and two passengers. Neil was not on the plane. More specific details regarding the collision are not available as this is a rapidly evolving situation and there is an ongoing investigation.”
It comes after a series of aviation incidents in the US.
Last week, a Japan Airlines plane taxiing across the tarmac in Seattle struck a parked Delta Airlines plane.
The plane hit the parked Delta plane as it passed, with the Japan Airlines wing slicing halfway through the Delta plane’s tail.
Nobody was hurt in the incident but both planes were badly damaged.
In the nation’s deadliest aviation disaster since 2001, an American Airlines jet collided with a US Army Black Hawk helicopter mid-air on January 29, causing both aircraft to crash into the icy waters of the Potomac River.
All 67 people involved were killed in the horror Washington DC crash.
Just days later, a medical jet crashed in north-east Philadelphia, killing a total of seven people and injuring at least 24.
