Out of more than 1,300 nominations, two Toowoomba bus drivers have picked up top awards at this year’s Queensland Bus Industry Council Gala dinner.

Allan Humphrey, 61, and Sam Davison, 32, were awarded as two of the best bus drivers in the state, at the event in Cairns on Saturday.

Mr Humphrey, who was nominated by a group of determined students on his bus, won School Bus Driver of the year, and he said he wouldn’t be here if not for them.

Mr Humphrey said the children he drives from Highfield Secondary College and Toowoomba Christian College, all got behind his nomination.

“There’s plenty of people out there driving buses and I’m sure a lot of them do just as good a job of doing it as I do,” he said.

“To me, I was just doing my job and being myself. It’s what I would have thought any driver would do.

“I wanted to do this for the kids because of the effort that they put into trying to get me nominated.

“If it wasn’t for the kids, it wouldn’t have happened.”

With Mr Humphrey back to work on Tuesday he said he is interested to see if the kids have found out about his win yet, but he knows they will be very excited that their hard work has paid off.

Sam Davison, who was awarded the Regional Bus Driver of the Year Award, said the most rewarding part of his job is making other people happy and winning this award has shown him that his passengers appreciate the work he does.

“It’s a really, really good feeling to be recognised for all the hard work and efforts and all the extra stuff I do that’s probably outside my scope,” he said.

“It’s rewarding to know that they appreciate what you do for them.

“Making someone feel appreciated and having someone to chat to as well is always a good thing,” Mr Davison said.

“Thank you to all of the passengers over the years.”

Having met on Mr Davison’s bus a couple of years ago, his now wife Maddy Davison was ‘over the moon’ about the win.

Going from passenger to partner, Ms Davison celebrated this exciting accomplishment with her husband at the Gala Dinner over the weekend.
