The family of a young mother believed to have been murdered by her former partner say “something must be done” to stamp out violence against women.

Mother Rachel McKenna was found dead inside an Ormond Rd property in Ascot Vale just after 4pm on Friday.

A man known to Ms McKenna, believed to have been her former partner, was found with critical injuries on the Princes Freeway at Little River less than two hours later.

He died at that scene.

Ms McKenna, who leaves behind a seven-year-old son, has since been remembered as a “deeply loved daughter” and a “dear friend to many”.

Her heartbroken sister, Meg Trotter, said the entire family was left reeling.

“We are absolutely devastated to let everyone know that we lost Rachel on Friday the 31st. Our family is broken with grief,” she said online.

“Rachel was a deeply loved daughter of Tony and Lee, big sister to Tom, Rory and Meg, a doting aunty, a dear friend to many, and a completely devoted mother to her seven-year-old, Leo.

“She was generous, vibrant, loyal, and looked forward to many adventures with her precious son. Our darling girl is already so missed, forever leaving a hole in our hearts and lives.”

Ms Trotter said the epidemic of violence against women needed urgent attention.

“Her death was an unnecessary tragedy, one we never dreamed would impact our family,” she said.

“Something must be done to stop violence against women in this country.”

Fellow loved one Terry McKenna said it was another “senseless killing” allegedly at the hands of a male perpetrator.

“Our hearts are shattered by the loss of beautiful Rachel McKenna, our lovely niece,” an online post read.

“Rachel was a vibrant, loving soul, a devoted mother to Leo, and a light in so many lives.

“Rachel’s grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and her many, many friends are also struggling with this senseless loss.

“Meg’s words echo our feelings – something must be done to stop violence against women.”

An online fundraiser to cover the costs of Ms McKenna’s memorial service raised nearly $7000 in just four hours on Tuesday.

Police are continuing to investigate the deaths but are not looking for anyone else.
