Teens who allegedly pointed fake guns at shoppers in Sommerville get bail

Three teenagers have been released on bail after allegedly pointing fake guns at a young mother and baby outside a Target store in Somerville in Victoria’s southeast.

Three teens have been bailed after allegedly terrifying shoppers in Somerville with fake handguns on Thursday morning.

The three boys, aged 13, 14 and 16 are alleged to have stolen imitation guns from a store on Eramosa Rd about 10.40am.

Police allege the offenders pointed guns at members of the public as they moved through the centre.

The boys were arrested a short time later, with a second picture circulating showing two of the teens handcuffed in the shopping centre car park.

“My wife rang me from the plaza. She said there were a whole lot of police running around and they caught a couple of youths,” Jorg told 3AW.

“What people had been saying (is) that these youths ran … with fake guns, handguns through the shopping centre, holding people up.

“They’ve got them arrested, handcuffed and sitting on the ground.

“My wife said, when she walked past, that they were just sitting there laughing. About 12 or 14 years old.”

While other shocked community members astounded by the teens’ alleged behaviour commented on social media.

“What is this world coming to?” one posted on Facebook. “I just don’t understand kids of today!!!”

“Oh my god that poor mother and her child walking out to that,” posted another. “How scary and traumatising, I cannot even imagine.”

The trio has been charged with affray and possession of an imitation firearm.

They were bailed to appear before a children’s court at a later date.
