A hot favourite to take over the running of the Melbourne Grand Prix has pulled out of the race.

Prominent business leader Paul Guerra had firmed as a serious contender to replace Australian Grand Prix Corporation boss Andrew Westacott when he steps down in June.

But the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry boss told members on Thursday he would not be pursuing the opportunity.

“As exciting, important and fundamental to Victoria as the AGPC is, I won’t be pursuing the opportunity,” he said.

“As you all know, part of our role is to advocate for business, especially now on the eve of what is expected to be a difficult Victorian Budget.

“I do feel that my integrity could be questioned by some if I participated in an interview process for a high-profile Government linked role at this time.

“My integrity, and that of the Chamber’s, is paramount and is something that I guard passionately.”

Mr Guerra said conjecture linking him to the role had been “unfair”.

Public commentary linking Mr Guerra to the role had been noted by senior government officials.

“For the record, our only comment to the media on this issue has consistently been a ‘no comment’,” Mr Guerra said.

“Our focus will remain on helping both business and Government navigate the expected turbulence ahead as best we can.”

Mr Westacott will stand down from the post he has held since 2011 when his contract expires on June 30.

Industry sources had considered Mr Guerra an outstanding candidate given his extensive business experience and passion for major events.

Mr Guerra is a former Chief Executive of the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (RASV), which runs the Melbourne Royal Show.

He’s also been the Chairman of the Queen Victoria Market and held senior positions at United Health Group, Motorola and Vodafone.

He was appointed as VECCI’s chief executive in 2019 and has been credited with raising the profile of the chamber while navigating the Covid-19 pandemic.
