Dave Hughes: We need some sort of voodoo to lift the curse on Carlton

Being a Blues fan right now is just hard. We need some sort of voodoo to lift the curse that seems to plaguing our whole club, Carlton tragic Dave Hughes writes.

Jeepers creepers. I’ve given up blaming any individuals. I think the place is cursed honestly.

I still go to Carlton games. Because unlike my teenage son I still remember the feeling of winning. Hopefully it happens in my lifetime. I’m trying to keep fit so that I can live another 50 years and see that it does happen. Because the reward if they do get it done will be immense.

There’s so many supporters in Melbourne and around Australia, so the Carlton team that does actually get it done, there will be statues made.

But my God, it is a mountain to climb for whoever that will be. It’s the impossible dream it would seem. I don’t know what it is with us. Why we cannot get right.

This has gone back to 2002. It’s crazy.

There was a hint with Denis Pagan back in the day. In 2004 we won 10 games, and we thought we’re going to come good. Then we went back to the bottom.

Then Ratts turned up and we thought we were coming good again, we had a great team. Then we went back to the bottom.

Malthouse got us an elimination final comeback win over Richmond after Essendon got kicked out of finals in 2013. That was great.

Then straight back to the bottom we went.

We waited another 10 years till our next finals and the 2023 finals run to the prelim with Vossy was so exciting.

But now we are back to the bottom again.

It’s happened again. Crazy.

There’s just so many false dawns for this club.

We’ve gone from playing two quarters to last week playing one quarter. Then this week not playing at all.

I’m not blaming individuals. I can’t blame individuals. The club has just … it’s just … it is just the club. It’s the whole club. And it’s been going on for 25 years.

We have torched so many reputations.

Talk to Denis Pagan, talk to Mick Malthouse. Two legends of coaching turned up to Carlton and left shattered men.

I feel sorry for everyone who turns up at the club these days. It’s just … it’s just so hard.

Carlton being bad is actually good for comedy to be honest. But I’d still rather not have it happen.

We need some sort of voodoo or something to lift the curse. Because being a Blues fan right now is just hard. It’s hard.
