Man left dies after St Kilda fight

A man has died after an assault on St Kilda’s Acland St earlier this month.

Distressing footage emerged of police and paramedics performing CPR on a man who was involved in a fight in front of horrified onlookers about 8.30am on March 1.

The victim, a 52-year-old Elwood man, was rushed to hospital as he fought for his life.

But a week later, on March 7, the victim died in hospital.

Police arrested a 51-year-old Windsor man, sporting blue jeans and a t-shirt, at the scene.

He was initially charged with intentionally cause serious injury in circumstances of gross violence and recklessly cause serious injury in circumstances of gross violence.

Investigators are now considering whether to upgrade those charges in the wake of the victim’s death.

The Windsor man was remanded in custody to appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on May 27.

Shocking footage of the aftermath of the incident shows a man lying on the ground as officers try to revive him.

One St Kilda resident who witnessed the attack but asked not to be named told the Herald Sun both men involved in the fight were known to the wider community.

“I was just walking to get a coffee and then this happened in front of me,” he said.

The resident said the incident highlighted how desperate pleas from residents to police and Port Phillip council to address the “rampant” drug dealing and crime in the area had been ignored.

“These are major issues that are only escalating,” he said.

The Herald Sun has previously aired the concerns of St Kilda residents and traders over what they have branded “rampant” drug dealing, public drug use and crime.

Owner of nearby Euro Bites Cafe Sam Liu has operated his business for a decade.

Mr Liu said there has been an increase in crime and disruptive behaviour in recent months.

“I’m not worried about the area and I love my store here, but there is definitely more things happening in St Kilda and in Acland Street.”
