THE Gold Coast tram network ground to a complete halt for at least five hours on Sunday night due to what authorities are calling a “radio communications” outage.
The entire network from Helensvale to Broadbeach shut down, leaving some passengers temporarily stranded on board. At about 6pm, the Bulletin observed at least four carriages banked up and empty on tracks between Surfers Paradise South and the Cypress Ave stations.
One staffer, asked what the problem was, threw his hands in the air and said “we don’t know mate”.
A TransLink tweet just after 10pm said: “Trams have resumed following an earlier disruption in radio communications. Buses will continue running to transport customers.”
But it added delays of 60 minutes could be expected on the light rail.
By 10.52, TransLink tweeted a further update, saying: “Trams are returning to normal schedule following an earlier disruption to radio communications.”
Trams stalled – and we ‘don’t know why mate’
October 24: Gold Coasters have been left in the lurch after all trams suddenly stopped mid journey on Sunday night and Glink say they don’t know when it will be fixed.
A Glink spokesperson said the Coast trams are having technical difficulties and staff were trying to get those who were still inside the trams out at their next stop.
The Bulletin has been told on some carriages people were initially not being let off and people were “getting angry”.
He said they were not sure when the issues would be fixed but urged residents to use buses.
The signs at tram stations are showing “TRAMS SUSPENDED. We apologise for the inconvenience.”
Update: Trams are suspended in both directions due to a disruption in radio communications. Alternative transport is being arranged to transport customers. See the Journey Planner to plan your alternative travel options. https://t.co/CybydqH85y#TLAlert#Glink#ridethegpic.twitter.com/MzG7P95jJX

Four trams are banked up between the Surfers Paradise North and Cypress Ave stations.
Asked what the problem was, one staffer at one of the out-of-service trams threw his hands in the air and replied: “Don’t know mate, we don’t know.”
Another staffer waiting solo on board another tram declined to comment.
