Gold Coast police are talking to a man who was the reason behind why multiple on the M1 were closed, leaving motorists stuck in gridlock.

Queensland Fire and Emergency services were called to a two-car crash southbound on the M1 in Coomera near exit 54 at 10.44am this morning.

A Gold Coast police spokeswoman said reports showed a man had run into the back of another car.

She said officers had to close the two far right lanes as a result of the crash.

The man was taken to Gold Coast University hospital with minor injuries.

Officers were questioning the man.

Motorists posted to Facebook community groups to tell others to avoid the M1.

“If you were thinking about going southbound on the M1, don’t,” Mat Duncan posted.

“It just got shut down and everyone is taking the back way to Pimpama.”

However, another commenter said the “back way was at a standstill”.

The incident was the second to cause gridlock on the M1 in less than 24 hours.

Evening commuters on Thursday faced lengthy delays after a crash involving a truck and two cars at Gaven saw traffic brought to a near standstill northbound along the M1 and westbound on the Smith St motorway.
