A major Gold Coast road was closed and two people taken to hospital following a serious traffic crash.

Marine Parade was closed near Railway St in Southport and the police forensic crash unit was called-in to investigate the incident.

A Queensland Fire Department spokesman said crews were called to the two-vehicle crash shortly before 10am on Thursday.

Two male patients were assessed by paramedics.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said one man has been rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital with life-threatening chest injuries.

The other was in a stable condition.

Heavy delays affected Marine Parade and Railway St in both directions for several hours following the crash.
